BACKGROUND

The Mayors Migration Council

The Mayors Migration Council (MMC) is a mayor-led coalition that accelerates ambitious global action on migration and displacement. With most of the world’s migrants and displaced people living in cities, our mission is to use the power of city leadership, diplomacy, and practice to create a world where urban migrants, displaced people, and receiving communities can thrive.

To achieve our mission, we provide mayors with advocacy, coordination, and communications support to influence policy decisions at the national and international level, and connect city governments to the knowledge, technical, and financial resources they need to accelerate and scale local solutions.

Created by mayors for mayors, we are a nimble team of political advisors and urban practitioners guided by a Leadership Board of global mayors.  We are managed as a sponsored project of Rockefeller Philanthropy Advisors and operate with the support of philanthropic and government donors.

THE POSITION

The MMC is seeking a Coalition and Convenings Lead to strengthen our global network of mayors and city leaders, foster collaboration around shared priorities, and deliver high-impact convenings that advance collective action.

The ideal candidate will bring a strong track record in coalition building, network programming, and convening design. They will know how to cultivate engaged communities, create opportunities for peer learning and collaboration, and bring diverse stakeholders together around shared goals. They will also be an experienced convener, capable of designing and delivering everything from focused mayoral roundtables to major international summits, with a keen eye for both strategic outcomes and participant experience.

This is a strategic and hands-on role requiring creativity, strong strategic judgment, excellent facilitation skills, and the ability to turn ideas into well-executed initiatives.

The position reports to the MMC's Director of Policy and Advocacy and works closely with program leads, the Executive Director, and colleagues across the organization.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Coalition Building and Engagement

  • Lead MMC's coalition engagement strategy, developing programs and opportunities that keep mayors and city officials actively connected, engaged, and collaborating around shared priorities.
  • Design and facilitate network programming, including city task forces, communities of practice, peer-learning exchanges, alumni networks, and other collaborative initiatives that foster relationships, knowledge sharing, and collective action.
  • Grow and strengthen the MMC's global coalition through targeted recruitment, regular outreach, city visits, and engagement activities, identifying opportunities for deeper participation and collaboration.
  • Anticipate and navigate mayoral transitions and changing political dynamics to sustain engagement and strengthen the coalition over time.

Strategic Convenings and Events

  • Lead the design and delivery of high-impact convenings, from small, curated dialogues and workshops to major international summits bringing together mayors, partners, and other influential leaders.
  • Shape convening objectives, formats, agendas, speakers, and facilitation approaches to create engaging experiences that generate meaningful exchange, concrete outcomes, and continued collaboration.
  • Working closely with the MMC's Operations Team, oversee event planning, budgets, participant engagement, and delivery, ensuring excellent execution and  seamless experiences for participants.
  • Build and share best practices in convening design and facilitation, advising colleagues across MMC on effective approaches to bringing people together.

Leadership Board and Strategic Partnerships

  • Manage engagement and programming for the MMC's Leadership Board of mayors, including meetings, strategic consultations, member recruitment, onboarding, and ongoing relationship management.
  • Cultivate and strengthen strategic partnerships with city networks, multilateral agencies, migrant- and refugee-led organizations, and other stakeholders, identifying opportunities for joint programming and collaboration.
  • Support the Executive Director in high-level engagements with mayors and senior partners, including preparing briefings, talking points, and strategic outreach.

Strategy and Delivery

  • Set clear goals, workplans, and measures of success for coalition engagement, convenings, and partnerships; track progress and continuously improve programming based on participant feedback and results.
  • Manage workstream budgets and resources, and strengthen the systems and tools needed for effective network engagement and partnership coordination.
  • Demonstrated experience building and activating networks or communities, with a track record of designing programs that sustain engagement, foster peer learning, and inspire collaboration.
  • Strong convening design and facilitation skills, including experience leading complex, high-level events and creating engaging formats that go beyond traditional panels and presentations.
  • Experience working with city governments, elected officials, international organizations, or multi-stakeholder coalitions, ideally in public policy, political affairs, or international cooperation.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and political judgment, with the confidence and discretion to engage mayors, senior officials, and diverse stakeholders across different political and cultural contexts.
  • Strong project management skills, including the ability to oversee multiple initiatives, coordinate teams and partners, manage budgets, and deliver excellent results under tight deadlines.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, including experience preparing executive briefings, high-level correspondence, and meeting materials.
  • A proactive, creative, and collaborative working style, with the initiative to develop ideas, solve problems, and drive work forward independently.
  • Fluency in English. Proficiency in another language, particularly Spanish or French, is strongly preferred.
  • Comfort using digital collaboration, network management, and project management tools, including Microsoft Office, and willingness to learn new systems.
  • Genuine commitment to MMC's mission and willingness to travel domestically and internationally as needed.
  • Candidates must be legally authorized to work in the United States without visa sponsorship.
