Main purpose of the role  

The Compliance & Risk Manager supports the Director leading on Legal Risk & Compliance in strengthening CIFF’s culture of compliance and risk. The position will help ensure that all of CIFF’s activities align with applicable legal, ethical, and regulatory standards and that risk is well managed across the organisation.

The role focuses on:

1. Operationalising CIFF’s compliance framework across its global operations and across issues such as anti-fraud and corruption, data protection, conflicts of interest, and modern slavery on a global level, with support from local lawyers and advisors.

2. Helping implement and manage CIFF’s organisational risk management framework, ensuring that emerging risks are identified, assessed, and addressed appropriately.

3. Assessing compliance risks and address compliance issues in CIFF’s programmes. The role will also provide support to the Director leading on Safeguarding on the compliance related aspects of safeguarding.

Role’s responsibilities  

Compliance Oversight and Support 

  • Manage the implementation and continuous improvement of CIFF’s compliance framework, policies, and procedures. 
  • Provide day-to-day advice to programme, operations, and country teams to ensure compliance with CIFF’s standards and regulatory requirements. 
  • Work with the CIFF Legal Team and external lawyers in other jurisdictions to understand and map compliance matters relevant to CIFF in those jurisdictions.  
  • Work with the respective Directors leading on Legal Risk & Compliance and Safeguarding to define and articulate CIFF’s approach to compliance across its operations, offices and structure.  
  • Assist in managing compliance-related incidents on CIFF programmes and advising CIFF on its compliance obligations in relation to such incidents.  
  • Ensure compliance reports and risk reports and updates are periodically prepared for the Executive Team and Board. 
  • Promote awareness of compliance obligations across CIFF through clear communication, guidance and training. 
  • Help identify and implement technology to help CIFF monitor and manage relevant regulatory updates in key jurisdictions. 

Risk Management and Governance 

  • Work collaboratively with the Director, Legal Risk & Compliance to maintain CIFF’s organisational risk framework. 
  • Monitor and update risk mitigation plans and escalate significant risks to the Director, Legal Risk & Compliance and Executive Team as appropriate. 
  • Support the integration of compliance and risk considerations into CIFF’s governance and operational planning. 
  • Contribute to the design and delivery of risk management training and awareness sessions for staff. 
  • Help identify and implement technology with CIFF’s DTS Team to help CIFF monitor and manage risk in key jurisdictions. 

Training, Awareness, and Capacity Building 

  • Deliver or coordinate induction and refresher training on compliance topics for CIFF staff and partners. 
  • Support the development of e-learning and training resources to embed a strong culture of compliance and risk. 
  • Provide guidance and mentorship to staff to strengthen compliance and risk knowledge across teams. 

Monitoring and Continuous Improvement 

  • Conduct periodic reviews of compliance and risk systems and controls to identify and implement process improvements. 
  • Support internal audits and due diligence exercises to ensure partner compliance with CIFF standards. 
  • Monitor changes in relevant laws and best practices, advising on and updating policies and procedures accordingly. 
  • Contribute to CIFF’s continuous learning agenda by identifying emerging compliance and risk management trends. 
  • Ensure that compliance issues are built into learning from a programme design perspective. 

Stakeholder and Partner Engagement 

  • Work collaboratively with programme teams to ensure compliance requirements (and learnings) are embedded throughout the grant lifecycle. 
  • Provide compliance-related guidance to grantees and implementing partners when required. 
  • Liaise with external advisors, regulators, and networks to share best practices and stay informed of emerging standards. 
  • Represent CIFF at relevant compliance and risk forums when delegated. 

Skills & Experience   

  • Demonstrated experience in compliance, legal, or risk management within a regulated sector. 
  • Knowledge of key compliance domains including corporate compliance, safeguarding, anti-bribery and corruption, fraud prevention, modern slavery, and data protection. 
  • Experience working with risk management frameworks and maintaining or analysing risk registers. 
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with attention to detail and sound judgment. 
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to convey complex compliance concepts clearly. 
  • High ethical standards and integrity, with the ability to maintain confidentiality and impartiality. 
  • Ability to work collaboratively and effectively in a multicultural and international environment. 
  • Ability to clearly articulate messages to a variety of audiences using multi-channels. 
  • Flexible and adaptable; able to work in ambiguous situations, resilient and tenacious with a propensity to persevere. 
  • Is passionate about CIFF’s mission, maintaining perspective on how daily actions contribute to improving the lives of children. 

Desirable 

  • Familiarity with regulatory bodies, such as the Charity Commission or similar. 
  • Legal or compliance qualification (e.g. Law degree, ICA certification, or equivalent). 
  • Experience delivering compliance training or awareness initiatives. 
  • Exposure to compliance work within international foundations or donor-funded programmes.

The salary for this role is £63,790

CIFF operates a hybrid work policy across all locations, which means employees work in the office and some of the time from home. We are happy to provide more information on this as part of the recruitment process.
