Yale Young Global Scholars (YYGS, http://globalscholars.yale.edu) is the premier summer academic enrichment and leadership development program of its kind for talented high school students from around the world. Enrolling approximately 2,000 high school students through a highly competitive application process, YYGS participants represent more than 150 countries and all 50+ U.S. states & territories. The program offers nine (9) sessions on Yale’s campus in STEM, social science, and cross-disciplinary fields. Senior Yale faculty members lecture in the program while dedicated undergraduate, graduate, and professional school student serve as residential life staff and academic instructors, leading small-group discussions and supervisising project work.
Yale Young African Scholars (YYAS, https://africanscholars.yale.edu/) is the premier academic enrichment and leadership development program of its kind for African high school students planning to pursue university education and who wish to make a meaningful impact on the continent. Enrolling approximately 350 high school students annually through a highly competitive application process, YYAS participants represent approximately 40 different countries across the African continent. The program offers a comprehensive online course (all live offerings, not recorded), an in-person summer program in Africa, and a robust alumni mentorship program. Senior Yale faculty members lecture in the program while dedicated undergraduate, graduate, and professional school student serve as residential life staff and academic instructors, leading small-group discussions and supervisising project work.
The Director serves as the chief operating officer of this dynamic, fast-growing organization dedicated to providing exceptional summer academic programming for promising high school students. Significant Director responsibilities include: articulate a multi-year strategic vision for continued program sustainability, strengthened academic content, and improved residential life experiences; oversee a robust and equitable admissions & enrollment process, with a focus on maintaining a large applicant pool and admissions selectivity while also continually increasing geographic diversity and accessibility; ensure sound financial management, legal compliance and safety practices; promote access and solicit gifts through partnerships and scholarship support; manage a team of at least 12 full-time staff and over 150 summer seasonal staff (between YYGS & YYAS); provide intellectual and administrative leadership during YYGS sessions in New Haven and YYAS sessions overseas; and serve as a key liaison to multiple internal and external stakeholders such as faculty members, senior administrators, heads of college, donors, and other service providers.
Required Skills and Abilities
1. Demonstrated ability with developing and managing summer enrichment programs or education organizations for high-achieving young adults, including significant strengths in the areas of admissions, marketing, budgeting, student experience, and personnel management.
2. Strong interpersonal skills, with a demonstrated ability to interact with a range of individuals including high school and college-age students, parents/families, faculty members, and staff on a wide variety of academic and administrative issues.
3. Demonstrated flexibility to adapt to changing work demands and manage multiple teams in a high pressure environment. Excellent organization, accuracy, attention to detail, and oral and written communication skills.
4. Ability to manage, recruit, retain, and empower a diverse team through delegating tasks and monitoring performance. Knowledge of and appreciation for global perspectives, diverse languages and cultures, and educational systems around the world.
5. Ability to quickly learn and excel in new technology, including online systems and platforms such as Technolutions Slate, Cvent, and Canvas; comfort with managing and analyzing large amounts of information in a fast-paced environment.
Preferred Education and Experience:
Advanced degree in education, higher education, counseling, social work, or human resources is strongly preferred. Experience in business, law, social science, humanities, or STEM field relevant to the program’s overall management or academic content. Experience managing financial and administrative operations in a university setting. Ability to work evenings and weekends during the summer. Willingness to travel abroad for overseas programming.
Principal Responsibilities
1. Directs one or more functional areas within an administrative department of the University and ensure compliance with University policies and procedures. 2. Directs analytic and research support for educational policies and planning and develops and approves administrative policies affecting assigned functional areas of the University. 3. Directs and establishes parameters for major projects for the department and University. 4. Interprets federal policies and regulations and educates staff and administration about regulations, restrictions, and the legal responsibilities of the University. 5. Directs and implements policy and program modifications and develops standards to ensure compliance with federal, state and local regulations. 6. Develops and administers an operating budget for the assigned department consistent with University policies and procedures. 7. Develops cost savings objectives and goals; authorizes major purchases and negotiates contracts that range from routine to complex in nature. 8. Establishes and implements long- and short-range goals for the functional area consistent with University goals and objectives. 9. Directs the development of related automated systems to support the function; determines office policies and procedures for use of automated systems. 10. Directs the evaluation and selection of vendors and negotiates contract details including work steps and pricing with the vendors on behalf of the assigned functional area. 11. Works with internal and external contacts to solve problems that range from routine to complex in nature. 12. Represents the University in discussions and negotiations with various governmental agencies. 13. Directs a staff of exempt and nonexempt employees. 14. May perform other duties as assigned.
