The Center for Global Development (CGD) is an independent, non-partisan, non-profit policy research organization in Washington, DC and London, UK that focuses on the issues and institutions that are critical to inclusive development. Through rigorous empirical research and active engagement with the global policy community, we focus on the policy intersections of low- and middle-income countries and the governments, institutions, and corporations that can be partners in delivering greater progress.

The center is seeking a Finance and Grants Associate to join the Finance and Institutional Advancement team. The role will be based in our Washington DC office, reporting to the Comptroller and the Assistant Director, Institutional Advancement. This is a 2-year fixed-term position with possibility of extension.

The Finance and Grants Associate will support all finance and fundraising activities in the DC office, working closely with all our research programs, to help streamline collaboration between finance, institutional advancement, and programmatic departments. The candidate must be able to build strong working relationships across multiple time zones, communicate effectively with colleagues in both our DC and London offices, and be able to manage multi-step processes and prioritize competing deadlines responsibly. 

The candidate must be able to demonstrate that they are self-motivated and able to work and learn remotely in addition to complying with the current institutional policy of in-office work three days per week.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
This role will provide support to the Finance and IA teams on a broad range of technical and administrative tasks to ensure a smooth finance and grant management process. 
The essential functions include, but are not limited to the following:

Grant Financial Management                         
  • Work closely with Program Coordinators to track grant income and expenditure and ensure compliance with grant budgets and institutional policies.
  • Support the preparation of financial reports for funders, working closely with program/project leads, IA and finance teams.
  • Collaborate with program, IA and finance staff to prepare proposal budgeting and cost projections.
  • Create grant codes for newly awarded funding.
  • Support the CGD subgrantees process (e.g., due diligence, collecting financial and narrative grant reports, signing contracts, disbursing payments, etc.).
  • Maintain financial reporting schedules for all active grants.
  • Coordinate FTE allocations across grants, working with Programs to ensure timely completion of monthly allocations. 
Budget Monitoring & Reporting
  • Help track expenditures against budgets and flag discrepancies and/or over/under spend.
  • Assist with the preparation of organizational financial reports, including data visualization (e.g., PowerBI).
  • Process and execute payments through bill.com, manage reimbursements through expensify, use Intacct to prepare monthly reports for programs and grant leads.
  • Manage all contracts (third party vendors and consultants) through DocuSign.
Donor Database Management
  • Enter and maintain funder and Opportunity records in CRM (Salesforce).
  • Generate routine and ad-hoc reports on expected payments, payments received, grant reporting deadlines, etc. in Salesforce.
Prospect Research
  • Conduct prospecting research on individuals, foundations and corporate donors using online databases, publicly available financials (e.g., 990), google, etc., and prepare accurate and thorough meeting and prospecting briefs for internal and external meetings.
Cross-Departmental & Administrative Tasks
  • Liaise between IA and finance departments to ensure financial compliance with fundraising activities.
  • Support CGD's annual audit, coordinating and organizing paperwork (invoices, grant agreements, etc.) as required for the successful completion of the audit. 
  • Track and assemble revenue data against fundraising goals, prepare data visualization for board reports bi-annually and for ad hoc requests.
  • Maintain up-to-date fundraising dashboards and donor pipeline reports.
  • Other duties as assigned.
The successful candidate will have the following qualifications and skills:
  • Bachelor’s degree. Finance and/or Accounting preferred but not required.  
  • Demonstrated experience and interest in finance/fundraising work experience (e.g., job, internship).
  • Experience working with budgets, financial reports, and donor databases (e.g., Salesforce).
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and financial reporting tools.
  • Previous experience with Intacct, bill.com, expensify, preferred but not required.
  • Strong data analytic skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with both finance and development teams.
  • Discretion and professionalism in handling sensitive financial and donor information.
  • Quick learner and problem-solver - intrinsically motivated to learn and grow. 
  • Genuine enthusiasm to help others and to see your work contribute to the benefit of the team. 
  • Excellent organization and attention to detail. 
  • Good time management skills, including the ability to quickly address urgent requests on short notice.

The organization is working hybrid with all staff required to be in the office at least three days per week. CGD is registered to employ staff living in DC, Maryland, or Virginia. Candidates must be able to live and work in one of these locations to be considered
