The Ellison Institute of Technology (EIT) is building the next generation of AI-driven, autonomous laboratories—where experimental science, robotics, and machine learning integrate to design, execute, and optimise experiments dynamically.

We are seeking a highly capable, hands-on Autonomous Laboratory Technician to play a central role in this transformation. This position is ideal for a scientifically strong, adaptable laboratory professional who thrives at the bench and is excited by the transition from traditional wet-lab workflows to automation-enabled and AI-supported experimentation. The ideal candidate is excited to work across a contrasting set of scientific disciplines, and flexibly adjust their thought processes accordingly.

In this role you will:

  • Execute, optimise and design wet-lab workflows
  • Translate scientific objectives into structured, reproducible, automation-ready protocols
  • Read scientific literature and execute scientific protocols found in the literature in the wet lab
  • Operate and support laboratory automation platforms, including liquid handling systems
  • Contribute to the transition from manual and semi-automated workflows to integrated automation systems
  • Collaborate closely with automation engineers, AI researchers, and interdisciplinary scientific teams
  • Maintain rigorous documentation, quality control, and biosafety compliance standards

This is a hands-on, execution-focused role with scientific responsibility and strong cross-functional engagement.

You will bring:

  • A bachelor’s or master’s degree in a relevant STEM discipline
  • Strong hands-on experience from a wet-lab environment
  • Demonstrated ability to independently execute and troubleshoot laboratory workflows
  • Experience translating experimental goals into structured, reproducible protocols
  • High attention to detail and commitment to experimental quality
  • Comfort working in a fast-evolving, technology-driven laboratory environment

Desirable experience includes:

  • Operating automated laboratory systems (e.g., liquid handlers, experience with Hamilton and OpenTrons is particularly useful)
  • Familiarity with structured data capture
  • Exposure to programming (e.g., Python) and machine learning concepts
