About Climate Catalyst

Climate Catalyst is a U.S. based non-profit dedicated to galvanising the collective power of business, investors, and civil society to influence and accelerate policy change in Asia and Europe. We work to strengthen collaboration and mobilise new actors on pivotal climate challenges to build power and compel political leaders to act at the speed and scale needed to tackle the climate crisis. We do this by:

  • Working behind the scenes with stakeholders in Europe and Asia to identify critical climate issues where action to date has been limited and collaboration potential is high.
  • Bringing together renowned experts and new entrants to share ideas, and design and deliver creative campaigns that secure decisive changes in national and regional policy to deliver sectoral tipping points and secure significant emissions reductions.
  • Advising on strategy, bringing creative communications, advocacy and movement building expertise to build power across the climate community to catalyse action.

To date, we’ve used this model successfully to build a strong and empowered communications network to challenge dominant narratives holding back progress in tackling the climate impact of industry, to mobilise the business community in support of the EU Nature Restoration Law, the first legislation for ecosystem restoration across Europe, and to spark action in India that led to commitment from the Ministry of Steel to develop green steel policy.

About the Role

The Programme Manager (India) will form part of our India programme team, working closely with our functional leads to deliver impactful strategies that target emissions reductions from heavy emitting industries in India. This role will focus primarily on decarbonisation of the Indian chemicals industry with a focus on green ammonia and fertilisers and take the lead on delivering activities and outputs related to this work. Candidates must bring prior experience and a solid technical understanding of the fertiliser or broader chemicals sector, including knowledge of green ammonia. As the initial six months will focus on strategy development and convening, experience in strategy consulting, communications, event management or campaign design is preferred, with the ability to translate insights into practical strategies.

This role is set as a 12-month contract, with  the possibility of extension and will report  to the Director, India.

What you will do

  • Work closely with Climate Catalyst teams and partners to craft policy solutions and recommendations that advance India’s transition to green ammonia and low-carbon fertilisers, and position these insights to guide policymakers and influencers.
  • Engage and convene civil society organisations working on these issues including think tanks, academic institutes, etc. to determine collective strategies for decarbonisation.
  • Build knowledge in the field of decarbonising fertilisers and chemicals, with a specific focus on green ammonia and relevant policy mechanisms such as SECI tenders and industrial subsidies, especially on hydrogen and chemicals more broadly.
  • In collaboration with partners, strategically engage C-suite executives and senior business leaders from the ammonia and fertiliser industry, including fertiliser companies, green ammonia producers, and trade associations in support of programme objectives, drawing on your network and the networks of other colleagues and partners as relevant.
  • Engage and manage subject-matter experts, consultants, and researchers as necessary to support our strategies.
  • Represent Climate Catalyst at relevant events and forums organised by partners and business associations.

What you would bring

  • At least five years of demonstrated experience in engaging businesses or civil society towards policy advocacy relating to climate change or industrial decarbonisation.
  • Direct professional experience and technical understanding of the fertiliser, ammonia or broader chemicals sector in India.
  • Experience engaging with Indian policy-making processes.
  • Experience in strategy consulting, communications, event management or campaign design, with the ability to translate insights into practical strategies.
  • Experience of working in multi-disciplinary teams to deliver on organisation-wide strategies.
  • Strong initiative and an ability to work both autonomously as well as within a team.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills including the ability to distill complex issues for a lay audience.
  • Ability to establish and maintain strong working relationships with civil society organisations, industry associations, and progressive businesses.
  • Awareness of the potentially diverse opinions and voices of Climate Catalyst’s partners and ensure they are taken into account in our policy positions and recommendations.
  • Ability to adapt and respond positively in circumstances where priorities need to shift quickly, and be open to working on different issues over time.
  • Humble, with low ego and ready to roll up your sleeves.
  • Committed to our values of courage, collaboration, diversity and learning.
