About the Team:

WaterAid Ghana’s Sustainable Programmes Department (SPD). This department provides strategic and technical guidance to fulfil WAG's programme objectives. The UAPT is committed to designing and implementing projects that adhere to the highest standards, with a focused aim of significantly enhancing the well-being of the underprivileged and vulnerable. This dedication aligns seamlessly with WaterAid's broader objective for Aim 1, ensuring impactful health outcomes through universal access to WASH.

About the Role:

The Project Co-ordinator role is central to achieving WaterAid Ghana's (WAG) strategic objectives within the Universal Access to Sustainable WASH Programme in the Bongo District of the Upper East Region of Ghana. This position is designed to bridge the gap between project aspirations and tangible outcomes, focusing on improving Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) in healthcare facilities (HCFs) in particular and communities at large. The job involves leading, coordinating and ensuring the seamless execution of activities, aligning with national policies and WAG's mission to transform the lives of the poorest and most marginalised people by improving access to safe water, sanitation and hygiene.

In this, you will;

A.     Leadership and Project Management

  • Lead project planning ensuring it aligns with the work scope and fosters co-operation within the assigned project team.
  • Offer dynamic leadership and technical guidance to staff, partners and consultants to enhance implementation of community, sub-district, district and regional level activities, including trainings, meetings, mentorship, supervision and reporting.
  • Co-ordinate project procurement plans and requests with relevant departments, ensuring donor and internal compliance for timely delivery and distribution.

B.      Project Planning and Implementation

  • Develop and implement work plans to timely achieve project milestones.
  • Develop terms of reference and requisitions for activity funds to facilitate effective and timely implementation of project activities.
  • Ensure project activities adhere to relevant project management, programme quality standards and Planning, Monitoring, Evaluation and Reporting (PMER) core guidelines, including organizational policies e.g. safeguarding and international best practices.

C.      Monitoring, Evaluation, Accountability and Learning (MEAL)

  • Support the establishment of an effective/up-to-date MEAL system, ensuring data collection and reporting align with WaterAid standards and donor expectations.
  • Participate and contribute to WAG internal reporting processes, including quarterly Programme Performance Reflections (PPRs)

D.     Stakeholder Engagement

  • Spearhead networking with sector actors within the project's geographic area.
  • Plan and facilitate coordination meetings with partners, donors, government agencies, and other stakeholders to ensure smooth project implementation, learning, and reporting.

E.      Communication and Advocacy

  • Ensure timely and smooth communication and reporting of implementation progress and results, including highlighting challenges/bottlenecks for prompt redress.
  • Document and share best practices and lessons learned from the project to improve visibility and impact at both local and national levels.

To be successful, you’ll need: 

  • A Master’s Degree in Public Health, Development Studies, or a related discipline.
  • At least 5 years' experience in project management and technical delivery in donor-funded Hygiene Behaviour Change (HBC) in community and health setting projects,
  • Demonstrated knowledge of WASH in Institutions framework specific to Ghana.
  • Knowledge and skills in project management
  • Knowledgeable in MEAL concepts, principles, tools and their application.
  • Experience in strengthening WASH systems, including developing sustainable service delivery and behaviour change models, and enhancing the capacity of service providers.
  • Expertise in crafting and leading training sessions on WASH IPC, WASH FIT, and hygiene behaviour change.

Desirable skills 

  • Proficiency in community-led management practices, demonstrating ability to effectively integrate WASH services with broader development goals.
  • Strong background in engaging a wide range of stakeholders, including local communities, local government authorities, central government agencies, civil society organisations (CSOs), non-governmental organisations (NGOs), development partners and the private sector, fostering effective collaboration and partnership.
  • Ability to collaborate across different development sectors, enhancing WASH outcomes through multi-sectoral approaches.
  • Experience in advocacy, related to rights-based, pro-poor, equity and inclusion issues within development contexts.
