Reporting to: Team Leader and Operations Manager

About Us:

Since 7th October 2023, the Gaza Strip has seen intense ground fighting and aerial bombardment. The level of sustained conflict has resulted in massive displacement of the local population and damage to the vast majority of buildings in the area, with over 51 million tonnes of rubble and an anticipated EO threat hidden within that rubble. Since the start of this recent conflict HALO has been monitoring the situation and planning a response in coordination with key authorities and the UN.

The humanitarian mine action sector’s response to the recent conflict is in the early stages of development, with a huge amount of work to do. UNMAS are currently developing standard working practices (SWPs) for key activities, and as such HALO has an opportunity to lean into the establishment of an effective HMA sector in Gaza, whilst making a meaningful difference to the lives of those living in desperate circumstances across Gaza.

*Please note that this role is for candidates currently residing in Gaza, and is not intended for International applicants*

The Translator/Community Liaison Assistant is responsible for:

  • In cases of contentions, chaving the sensitivity to choose words carefully and avoid using sharp and pejorative words
  • Act as main community liaison between HALO teams and the local communities visited, to ensure acceptance of the teams
  • Assist with any other duties as requested

This is a field role, with the expectation of being on the ground with the team and returning to the office to conduct written reports. The Translator will work under the Team Leader in a team, and will take instructions from those above them in the chain of command.
