Role Summary

ALX Africa is seeking a dynamic and passionate Community Associate to help build, nurture, and scale a thriving alumni community in South Africa. This role will support the Alumni Community, a network of 20,000+ graduates across our programmes.

The successful candidate will catalyse powerful, transformative shared experiences and enduring relationships, while also supporting networking initiatives, career development services, and digital community engagement. You will ensure that alumni stay connected, supported, and empowered to grow professionally and contribute meaningfully to the broader ALX ecosystem.

This role requires a community builder with exceptional interpersonal skills, a data-driven mindset, and the ability to operate across multiple platforms and stakeholder groups simultaneously. Occasional weekend availability will be required for major alumni events.

Specific Responsibilities

1. Community Building & Engagement

  • Design and execute community engagement initiatives that build meaningful connections, brand and recruitment — including 1-on-1 outreach, group activations, and in-person experiences.
  • Actively engage with alumni across platforms, including the e-Hub Portal, WhatsApp, LinkedIn, and Instagram, building authentic relationships and maintaining consistent touchpoints.
  • Support the growth of alumni initiatives and local networking groups across the South African region.
  • Build simple systems and feedback loops that help alumni feel heard, enabling two-way communication with the ALX South Africa team.
  • Support the community ambassador program that further community building and recruitment.

2. Events & Experience Design

  • Assist in planning and coordinating alumni events, workshops, career networking sessions, and in-person industry activations — including weekly online events and in-person gatherings.
  • Manage event logistics end-to-end, including communication, scheduling, venue coordination, and post-event follow-up.
  • Support the delivery of professional readiness workshops such as mock interviews, CV/LinkedIn/GitHub critiques, and fireside chats with industry practitioners.
  • Organise and participate in hackathons, panel events, and other high-impact community moments that reinforce the ALX brand and values.
  • Support organising alumni for key events to showcase ALX quality

3. Career Support & Alumni Networking

  • Assist in delivering career development resources, mentorship programmes, and networking opportunities that accelerate alumni professional growth.
  • Support outreach and engagement to secure alumni in job placements, internships, freelance opportunities, and upskilling programmes. This can include job fairs, mixers, etc.
  • Connect alumni with external mentors, practitioners, and potential employers, as well as industry and the ecosystem.
  • Maintain and update alumni databases to track career progress, employment outcomes, and community engagement activity.

4. Communications & Content

  • Create and distribute engaging community content across WhatsApp, LinkedIn, and Instagram — tailored to each stage of the community journey.
  • Produce newsletters, social media posts, and other communication assets that reflect the ALX voice and reinforce community identity.
  • Collaborate with the marketing team on digital campaigns, ensuring community messaging aligns with broader brand strategy.
  • Keep community channels active, relevant, and vibrant through consistent, purposeful communication.

5. Data, Reporting & Continuous Improvement

  • Track and report on community engagement metrics, using data to identify trends and inform programming decisions.
  • Support the alumni data organisation to ensure accurate records and improve engagement efforts.
  • Gather community feedback through surveys, observation, and informal interviews — summarising insights to support continuous improvement.

Skill Requirements - Essential

  • 2–3 years of experience in programme coordination, community management, events management, alumni relations, or a closely related field.
  • Demonstrated passion for career development, youth empowerment, mentorship, and community building.
  • Experience in social media engagement, digital community management, and content creation.
  • Strong organisational skills with the ability to manage multiple workstreams, deadlines, and stakeholder relationships simultaneously.
  • Proficiency with Google Workspace and comfort using project management and CRM tools.
  • Confident and regular user of WhatsApp, LinkedIn, content management systems, and communication platforms.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced, mission-driven environment.
  • Occasional weekend availability for key alumni and fellowship events.

Skill Requirements - Preferable

  • Familiarity with HubSpot or equivalent CRM tools.
  • Experience in data management, analysis, and reporting — with the ability to translate data into actionable insights.
  • Prior experience working in tech education, youth employment, NGOs, or the broader African tech ecosystem.
  • Experience managing or contributing to large-scale digital campaigns or multi-platform community programmes.
  • Understanding of the South African youth employment landscape and awareness of ALX Africa programmes.
