Chief of Staff, Operations/Exco (Internal Opportunity)

We are inviting internal applications for an evolved Chief of Staff role in the context of our new E3G 2026-2030 Strategy and supporting our continued leadership renewal.


The Chief of Staff role sits at the centre of organisational leadership and will work closely with the CEO and Chief Programme Officer (Deputy CEO) and wider Exco to strengthen our leadership alignment and execution as we implement our strategy, focus on our pathfinding mission towards being a think tank fit for the 2030s in support of our climate safety for all vision.


This is an evolution of the existing Chief of Staff function in the context of our leadership reset at Exco level and ongoing leadership and governance strengthening — this role will provide strategic leverage to senior leadership.


The Chief of Staff will

  • Support leadership prioritisation, decision-making and communication
  • Help ensure organisational effort is focused on the highest-impact outcomes
  • Strengthen strategic alignment and coherence across Exco, SMT/SLT and board discussions
  • Support high priority strategic initiatives and external engagement with the CEO and CPO
  • Build and renew effective governance and leadership processes and cycles to support strategic alignment and execution
  • Work alongside the new Impact Lead and Transformation Lead as part of the organisation’s strategy execution enabling “engine.


Person profile

We are looking for someone who:

  • Brings strong organisational judgement and the ability to prioritise in complex environments
  • Is comfortable working directly with senior leadership and navigating ambiguity, working independently while maintaining strong alignment with leadership direction
  • Can operate in a complex and changing context, supporting and enabling alignment and execution
  • Brings both strategic judgement and initiative to make things happen
  • Understands how leadership decisions translate into organisational action
  • Has experience and credibility working across teams, programmes or organisational processes
  • Shows discretion, reliability and the ability to build trust at senior levels


For internal applicants, familiarity with organisational culture, leadership dynamics and operating practices will be a strong advantage.

  • E3G offers a reward and benefits package which compares well with other organisations within our sector. The indicative salary range in the UK is £62,825 to £67,000 for this position dependant on experience.
