Role Overview (Up to 6-month Full-Time Fixed-term Employment Contract)
Global Citizen is seeking an experienced Content Manager to lead content strategy, planning, and production for Move Afrika during a six-month fixed-term contract.
Based in Johannesburg, South Africa, this role is responsible for developing and executing an integrated content strategy that supports Move Afrika before, during, and after its flagship events. The successful candidate will oversee editorial planning, content production, and freelance creative teams across multiple African markets while ensuring every piece of content aligns with Global Citizen's brand, advocacy goals, and storytelling standards.
This role combines strategic thinking with hands-on execution. The Content Manager will develop Move Afrika's year-round content strategy while ensuring all content captured during the contract period is intentionally planned, produced, organized, and archived to create a lasting content library that supports future campaigns and future Move Afrika events.
Working across multiple time zones, the Content Manager will collaborate closely with marketing, social, creative, video, editorial, and policy teams in Africa and the United States to deliver compelling storytelling that elevates the Move Afrika brand and inspires audiences to take action.
Key Responsibilities
1. Content Strategy & Planning (35%)
- Lead the development and execution of the year-round content strategy for Move Afrika.
- Develop messaging frameworks, editorial calendars, and integrated content plans across social media, web, email, video, and partner channels.
- Translate campaign objectives into compelling, audience-first storytelling that supports marketing and advocacy goals.
- Build strategic content roadmaps that extend the life of Move Afrika beyond each live event.
- Ensure all content captured during the contract period contributes to a long-term content library that can be repurposed across future campaigns and future Move Afrika events.
- Identify compelling storytelling opportunities featuring artists, communities, beneficiaries, campaign moments, and the broader impact of Move Afrika.
- Maintain Global Citizen's editorial standards, voice, and brand consistency across all Move Afrika content.
2. Content Production & Editorial Management (40%)
- Lead end-to-end planning and production of Move Afrika content across social media, web, email, video, and partner platforms.
- Develop comprehensive content capture plans to ensure performances, artist interviews, advocacy moments, backstage content, community stories, and campaign milestones are fully documented.
- Manage editorial calendars and production schedules across multiple workstreams.
- Write, edit, review, and approve high-profile content before publication.
- Partner closely with Creative, Social, Video, Editorial, Marketing, and Policy teams to deliver integrated campaigns.
- Ensure content is optimized for each platform while maintaining a cohesive campaign narrative.
- Oversee the organization, tagging, cataloguing, and archiving of all content assets for future use.
- Monitor campaign performance and audience insights to continuously refine content strategies and maximize engagement.
3. Production & Freelancer Management (25%)
- Recruit, onboard, brief, and manage freelance writers, photographers, videographers, producers, and other creative contractors across Move Afrika host countries.
- Coordinate multiple on-the-ground production teams to ensure consistent, high-quality content capture across all markets.
- Develop production briefs, schedules, workflows, and deliverables for freelance teams.
- Manage production timelines and ensure all deliverables are completed on schedule.
- Ensure freelancers adhere to Global Citizen's editorial and brand standards.
- Work closely with local production partners to deliver seamless event coverage.
Fundamental Requirements
Education & Experience
- Bachelor's degree or Diploma in Journalism, Communications, Marketing, Media Studies, or a related discipline, or equivalent professional experience.
- 4β5 years of experience managing content production, editorial operations, digital content, or integrated marketing campaigns.
- Demonstrated experience developing and executing content strategies for live events, entertainment, music, sports, cultural, or mission-driven campaigns.
- Experience managing freelance writers, photographers, videographers, producers, or creative agencies.
- Exceptional writing, editing, and storytelling skills.
- Strong editorial judgment and attention to detail.
- Proven project management experience with the ability to manage multiple priorities simultaneously.
- Experience collaborating across multiple regions and time zones.
- Familiarity with African media, entertainment, music, and cultural landscapes is highly desirable.
- Experience working within an international or mission-driven organization is an advantage.

More Details
- Must be based in Johannesburg, South Africa.
- Must possess a valid passport and be able to travel to Move Afrika host countries as required.
- Must be authorized to work in South Africa.
- Must be able to maintain a minimum of three hours of overlap with U.S.-based colleagues each working day. The anticipated working hours for this role are approximately 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM SAST (including a lunch break), with flexibility during major campaign milestones and live events.
- Willingness to travel frequently during campaign planning and live event periods.
- Pro-rated Annual Salary: R558,000 - R680,000 South African Rand
