Job Summary:
The Deputy Director, Research and Analysis (R&A), reports to the Director, R&A, and is responsible for identifying emerging trends and threats and commissioning research into these, working with both internal and external subject matter experts, in collaboration with the Research Director. The Deputy Research Director will write, edit and commission reports (responsibility will vary depending on timing/ nature of research) and manage specialist researchers as needed.
This position is only open to internal candidates who are already employed by CPJ, as it requires specialized and built-in knowledge of CPJ’s systems and the nature of our work, as well as the ability to perform global analysis of CPJ data.
Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities:
- Work with regional programs and the Emergencies and Advocacy teams to identify emerging press freedom trends and issues, and share insights across the organization that informs CPJ’s advocacy, awareness, and assistance efforts.
- Research, write, edit, and commission pieces that showcase CPJ’s unique research and analysis and helps internal and external audiences understand main issues and dynamics impacting journalists’ safety.
- Recruit and manage specialist researchers/ contractors as needed for specialist research projects.
- Work with the Data and Visualizations Editor to ensure research is presented effectively in a variety of formats.
- Support the Impact and Strategy Manager to ensure internal adoption and development of Carta as a research platform.
- Monitor research produced by other organizations and explore and support research partnerships.
- Develop new ideas for thematic research.
- Represent CPJ in media interviews (local and international), conferences, and meetings with authorities, companies, and other stakeholders as needed.
- Provide day‑to‑day leadership and supervision to staff as assigned, including setting clear expectations, delegating work, monitoring performance, coaching and developing team members, conducting evaluations, addressing performance or conduct issues, supporting hiring and onboarding, and fostering an inclusive, accountable, and high‑performing team culture.
- Collaborate with other departments as needed.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Education/Qualifications & Work Experience:
- Minimum of five years experience in researching, reporting, and publishing on press freedom and/ or journalist safety.
- Strong understanding of how press freedom issues intersect with others such as technology, human rights, corruption, regional and local dynamics, and democracy.
- Excellent English writing, reporting and organizational skills.
- Significant experience of press freedom advocacy and assistance efforts, including managing information and/or databases to support this work.
- Experience managing individual contractors and project work across time zones and subject matters.
- Strong understanding of how Carta is used across CPJ and its potential as a research platform.
- Proficiency in Google Workspace, including Gmail, Google Calendar, Docs, Sheets, and Drive, with basic working knowledge of its tools and functionalities.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision, and as part of a team in a fast-paced, collaborative environment.
- Strong commitment to press freedom.
- Familiarity with AP style.

Work Location:
This position is located in the United States, with a strong preference for candidates based in the NYC commutable area, and is classified as hybrid-optional or remote. Availability to work and attend meetings on the US Eastern time zone as needed is required.
