Editorial Researcher (Temporary)

Axios
On-site
Washington, DC

The big picture: Axios is hiring a temporary Editorial Researcher to support the development and production of an exciting new video series launching this fall.

Why it matters: This full-time, temporary role will be critical in helping our reporters prepare for on-camera interviews and provide editorial guidance as the team finalizes guests, scripts, and field shoots. The position will likely run through the length of the project - likely through November but possibly into Decemeber. Work will span pre-production ramp up, shoot weeks, and post-shoot wraps — as well as real-time editorial needs.

Go deeper: The Editorial Researcher will be responsible for:

  • Conducting comprehensive background research on potential and confirmed guests, interview topics, policy angles, and relevant context
  • Preparing pre-interview briefs, segment research packets, and supporting materials for interviewers, producers, and collaborators — including compiling facts, quotes, and recommended questions
  • Monitoring breaking news to inform guest selection and segment direction up to the moment of an interview
  • Supporting fact-checking, guest vetting, and framing decisions to ensure accuracy and journalistic integrity
  • Contributing editorial guidance to help shape compelling, concise episodes with strong narrative flow and timely hooks
  • Attending team calls to align on prep, priorities, and deadlines
  • Potentially assisting with booking logistics or advising on timing needs based on research findings

The Details: Ideal candidates will embody an entrepreneurial spirit, a passion for Axios’ mission, and have the following skills:

  • Deep experience as a researcher with a producer mindset preferably in a newsroom, docu-style production or interview-based programming
  • Familiarity with Axios’ editorial tone and coverage areas, particularly politics, business, tech, health, and media
  • Experience working with and influencing many high-level internal stakeholders
  • Strong communication skills, including video production, writing and editing
  • Strong work ethic, detail-oriented style and ability to continuously prioritize and execute
  • Eagerness to work with internal team and subject matter experts on episode ideas, interviews and research
  • Ability to ensure strong show-site interaction on segment topics
  • Enthusiasm for reading, watching and listening voraciously to discover and bring to life new segment ideas

Starting salary for this temporary role is in the range of $8,000/month - $10,500/month and is dependent on numerous factors, including but not limited to location, work experience, and skills. This range does not include other compensation and benefits. Axios' compensation philosophy takes into account cost of labor differentials across the country. Because this is a remote-optional job posting, this salary range takes into account all possible locations within the United States, but candidates will only be eligible for the salary range for their location.

What Axios brings to the table besides salary:
  • Robust PPO and High Deductible health insurance options on the Blue Cross Blue Shield network
  • Employer Health Savings Account (HSA) contribution for the high deductible health plan option
  • Dental and vision coverage
  • Tele-mental health services through Headspace
  • OneMedical membership, including tele-health services
  • Personal health advocacy resources through HealthAdvocate
  • Access to the Axios “Family Fund”, which was created to allow employees to request financial support when facing financial hardship or emergencies
  • Increased work flexibility for parents and caretakers
  • Virtual company-sponsored social events
  • A strong and positive work environment
  • A commitment to an open, inclusive, and diverse work culture
