Wellcome is a global charitable foundation. We improve health for

We are looking for an Equity Monitoring and Evaluation Manager to join our Equity Lab Team.

For the Equity Department to achieve the desired impact, Wellcome needs to keep track of available of evidence on what works, contribute to filling evidence gaps and promote the uptake of effective interventions into policy and practice.

We aim to centre communities most affected and lived experience for transformative impact on our mission through high-quality evidence on what works for health equity, workplace equity, equitable research practice and equitable research ecosystems.

What is Equity Lab?

We are establishing a centre for learning and innovation to support research generation and synthesis and promote evidence uptake to improve equity within Wellcome and the research ecosystem.

The Equity Lab will also play a leading role in delivery of a Wellcome-wide approach to monitoring and evaluating how well our work delivers on our Equity Framework ambitions and ensure we know both the human and health impact of Wellcome’s activities.

The Equity Lab will have a key role in socialising evidence and insights, not just for uptake within Wellcome, but externally as a global public good centring the voices of those we collaborate with.

What will I be doing?

The Equity Monitoring and Evaluation Manager drives delivery against Wellcome’s Equity Framework by designing, embedding and overseeing monitoring, evaluating and learning (MEL) approaches. The manager innovates approaches to MEL and commissions evaluations on Equity-activities and approaches, scoping and overseeing funding. The role will support teams to embed MEL into their projects, learn from one another and enable Wellcome to understand progress made against the Equity Framework. The manager will also support a culture of learning, knowledge sharing and continuous improvement across Wellcome.

As an Equity Monitoring and Evaluation Manager you will:

  • Develop and implement strategies for MEL related to Equity across Wellcome, driving the Equity Lab's objectives.

  • Operate independently to create MEL approaches and frameworks for Equity and commission evaluations.

  • Support Wellcome teams by maintaining a central repository of high-quality evidence and insights.

  • Collaborate on projects and programmes to promote a culture of evaluation and learning, providing guidance on integrating Equity into MEL.

  • Ensure Equity is embedded in Wellcome's governance and MEL processes, interpreting data to measure progress against the Equity Framework.

  • Manage relationships with external evaluators and contribute to an inclusive culture by exhibiting values and inclusive practices.

  • Conduct work according to Wellcome's budget, governance, policies, values, and behaviours and adapt to role changes as needed to fulfil Wellcome's mission.

Is this job for me?

You will be a skilled and adaptable manager, adept at managing a portfolio of activities around monitoring, evaluating and learning (MEL) to support Equity practices. Your proficiency will extend to offering advice, interpreting data, commissioning external sources and storytelling. With strong data literacy and MEL skills, you bring experience from varied approaches in a science or research environment. As a competent communicator, you'll excel at disseminating learnings to inform future practices, while remaining flexible to changing priorities and adept at addressing issues in a dynamic research setting. Your passion for Equity and dedication to fostering a culture of learning, critical reflection and evidence-based decision-making are qualities that we highly value and encourage.

Minimum Criteria:

  • Strong MEL skills, with experience of conducting MEL on Equity in health and science contexts and excellent ability to analyse/interpret data and translate findings into actionable recommendations.

  • Experience working on MEL for Equity, with knowledge of the opportunities and challenges for Equity across Health and Research.

  • Skilled in communicating insights and learnings and crafting strong and accessible narratives to support learning and change adoption.

  • Experience of delivering key projects/pieces of work to a high standard within tight deadlines.

Our Hybrid Way of Working

We are currently working 3 days per week (Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday) from our Euston Road offices (as part of our hybrid Ways of Working) with the remaining 2 days working either remotely or in the office.
