  • Experiment with storytelling and new formats
  • Stay updated on audience strategies to reach new readers across platforms
  • Demonstrate support and understanding of our value of journalistic independence and a strong commitment to our mission to seek the truth and help people understand the world.

  • Deep knowledge of and sources in California or Hawaii

  • Clear, straightforward writing with a high standard of usage, grammar and evocative language
  • Proven ability to work collaboratively as part of a team and share credit with colleagues
  • An established track record of news reporting, writing clearly and with style, and with a grasp of New York Times style guidelines

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated creativity in identifying and developing news features with a strong appeal to digital readers
  • Familiar with a variety of story forms, including insightful live updates, takeaways that summarize complex events, explainers off the news, tick-tocks, timelines and more
  • A desire to learn new tools and formats — and an interest in shaping them for the future
  • A reader-focused outlook that seeks to serve the interests of curious digital audiences
  • An interest in driving the evolution of news coverage in the digital age, imagining new ways to tell stories and solving problems collaboratively
