About Anthropic

Anthropic’s mission is to create reliable, interpretable, and steerable AI systems. We want AI to be safe and beneficial for our users and for society as a whole. Our team is a quickly growing group of committed researchers, engineers, policy experts, and business leaders working together to build beneficial AI systems.

About the Role

We’re seeking a culturally attuned Head of Social Communications with impeccable judgment and genuine range.

You’ll drive proactive and reactive social communications strategies for both Anthropic and Claude, expressing and balancing each distinctive brand with technical credibility, audience empathy, and candor about both the promise and risks of AI.

This role will sit within the Communications team, but operate at the seam between Communications and Marketing, ensuring our organic social communications, campaigns and incident response work in concert with editorial, earned media, brand campaigns, and product marketing.

You’ll facilitate thoughtful, high-substance social conversation around new models, products, and major company announcements, partnering closely with our marketing, editorial, and creative teams.

You'll also lead our social response for breaking news cycles, and manage the issues and incidents that come with being at the center of the AI conversation.

Responsibilities

  • Own and evolve social communications strategy for Anthropic's brand channels across current and emerging platforms, deepening trust with our audiences and reaching new communities as we grow
  • Steward Anthropic's voice across platforms and audiences: nuanced, candid, technically credible, and empathetic
  • Serve as the bridge between Communications’ and Marketing’s social workstreams, ensuring all of the functions are working together
  • Build affinity for both the Anthropic and Claude brands, partnering closely with the Claude social marketing team so company, research, and product storytelling complement one another
  • Plan and execute social communications strategy for major moments, including model launches, research publications, policy positions, partnerships, and company milestones. Translate complex technical material for broad audiences
  • Lead reactive issue and incident communications on social channels including X, coordinating with communications leadership, legal, policy, and the community teams to respond with speed, accuracy, and sound judgment
  • Build and nurture our online communities: monitor sentiment and cultural conversation in real time, engage authentically with developers, fans, and critics, and apply judgment on how and when to support constructive conversations
  • Identify and engage key voices in the AI ecosystem — researchers, builders, creators, and commentators — to extend our reach and credibility
  • Measure what matters: track sentiment, share of voice, brand affinity, and community health, and use those insights to inform the team’s strategy
  • Help shape the future of the social function as it grows, including mentoring teammates and managing agency or contractor support

You may be a good fit if you:

  • Have 8+ years of experience leading social communications and response strategy for a brand operating under significant public, media, or community scrutiny
  • Have a proven track record of growing audiences, and of deepening engagement and trust, not just follower counts
  • Possess exceptional writing skills and demonstrated mastery of nuanced brand voice: you can move between technical depth, institutional gravity, and genuine playfulness with ease
  • Have operated across communications and marketing organizations, and understand how organic social, earned media, brand, and product marketing fit together
  • Have managed multi-brand or company-plus-product social ecosystems, keeping distinct voices coherent and complementary
  • Have led social channel strategy through genuine crises and high-stakes news cycles, with clear escalation frameworks and calm, rapid judgment
  • Have built and managed online communities at scale, with fluency in internet culture and the specific dynamics of developer and AI communities
  • Are fluent with social analytics and can connect platform data to brand and business outcomes
  • Thrive in fast-paced environments and can manage planned campaigns and unplanned moments simultaneously
  • Care about ensuring that transformative AI systems are developed and communicated about responsibly

Strong candidates may also:

  • Have experience in AI, machine learning, or frontier technology companies
  • Have managed social for developer or technical audiences
  • Bring a background in journalism, editorial, or creative fields
  • Have video editing and multimedia production skills
  • Have experience managing agencies, contractors, or direct reports
  • Bring international social media experience and an understanding of how our voice travels across markets

How we're different

We believe that the highest-impact AI research will be big science. At Anthropic we work as a single cohesive team on just a few large-scale research efforts. And we value impact — advancing our long-term goals of steerable, trustworthy AI — rather than work on smaller and more specific puzzles. We view AI research as an empirical science, which has as much in common with physics and biology as with traditional efforts in computer science. We're an extremely collaborative group, and we host frequent research discussions to ensure that we are pursuing the highest-impact work at any given time. As such, we greatly value communication skills.

The easiest way to understand our research directions is to read our recent research. This research continues many of the directions our team worked on prior to Anthropic, including: GPT-3, Circuit-Based Interpretability, Multimodal Neurons, Scaling Laws, AI & Compute, Concrete Problems in AI Safety, and Learning from Human Preferences.
