UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, is offering a full-time internship with the Information Management of the Service under the Protection/DIMA at UNHCR Maputo, Mozambique.

Established in December 1950, UNHCR is a global organization dedicated to saving lives, protecting rights and building a better future for asylum seekers, refugees, returnees, internally displaced communities and stateless people. Every year, millions of men, women and children are forced to flee their homes to escape conflict and persecution. UNHCR currently operates in over 130 countries, using its long expertise to protect and care for millions.

Organizational context

The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) is an international organization with the mandate to assist persons in need of international protection; asylum seekers; refugees; stateless persons; and internally displaced persons. The UNHCR operation in Mozambique has its main office in Maputo, a sub-office in Pemba, a field office in Nampula, and two field units in Cabo Delgado. The working language of the UNHCR offices in Mozambique is English.

As of 31st October 2025, Mozambique hosts around 25,000 refugees and asylum seekers. Mozambique also has 1.3M IDPs, many of whom have experienced multiple displacements due to armed insurgency and natural disasters. As Mozambique responsibility for the Angola operation under Multi-Country Office, Angola hosts approximately 55,000 refugees and asylum-seekers, primarily in Luanda.

DIMA unit focuses on several areas, including protection monitoring, registration & data management, protection cluster leadership, PSEA, Protection information management, community-based protection, and durable solutions, and the intern will focus its work in supporting partner activities. S/he may be required to go on missions to support prioritized activities.

The position

Under the supervision of the DIMA Coordinator/Officer the intern will support partners work in the area of data management.

Duties and responsibilities

Technical support UNHCR partners on digitization efforts, including development of an AAP mechanism.

Technical support to UNHCR partners on the data collection tools and management.

Support on service mapping, data cleaning, visualizations, and assessments/survey/studies/protection monitoring.

May be required to support registration activities including ProGres technical support and on-site assistance to partners.

Build and maintain data-driven applications using MySQL, Microsoft SQL Server databases and server-side technologies such as PHP, Python, R, ASP.NET and C#.

Develop and maintain dynamic, responsive web applications, integrating APIs to deliver seamless user experiences (knowledge of JavaScript, CSS).



Eligibility

In order to be considered for an internship, candidates must meet the following eligibility criteria:

Be either a recent graduate (having completed their studies within two years of applying) or a current student in a graduate/undergraduate school programme from a university or higher education facility accredited by IAU/UNESCO1; and

Have completed at least two years of undergraduate studies in a field relevant or of interest to the work of UNHCR2.

An individual whose father, mother, son, daughter, brother or sister is a staff member of UNHCR, including a Temporary Appointment holder or a member of the Affiliate Workforce, is not eligible for an internship

3Desirable qualifications and skills

Experience in web content management.

Proficient in JavaScript, including API integration.

Proficient in GitHub for version control and collaborative development.

Experience in web design and software development.

Experience with ODK, KoBo, PowerBI, MSSQL, HTML, and PHP.

Working knowledge of Portuguese

Conditions

It is a full-time role with working hours starting from 8.00 am to 4:30 pm, Monday to Thursday with half an hour lunch break and 8.00 am to 01.30 pm on Friday with no lunch break (37.5 hours per week). The successful candidate will be assigned to support the team in Maputo, Mozambique.

The Intern’s allowance for Information Management Internship location is 955.67 USD per month.

Internships normally last two to six months with the possibility of extension up to eight months for full-time internships and twelve months for part-time internships.
