Internal Communications Manager

Salary: £60,200

Closing date: Sunday 8, June 2025

Contract type: Permanent

Interview dates: Wednesday 2, Thursday 3 & Friday 4, July 2025

Wellcome is a global charitable foundation. We improve health for everyone by funding science, leading policy and advocacy campaigns, and building partnerships.

We plan to spend £16bn in the decade to 2032, funding new discoveries in life, health and wellbeing, and taking on three global health challenges: mental health, infectious disease and climate.

These challenges need the bold science we support, but they won’t be solved by science alone.

We’re looking for an Internal Communications Manager to join our team on a permanent basis.

Where in Wellcome will I be working?

You’ll work in Wellcome’s Internal Communications team, reporting into the Internal Communications Lead. We keep Wellcome’s staff informed, motivated and inspired to contribute to Wellcome’s mission. We work on a wide range of communications, from telling the story of our scientific impact to sharing operational updates and driving change across Wellcome.

This team sits within Wellcome’s Corporate Affairs and Engagement team.

What will I be doing?

You’ll partner with key teams across the organisation to advise on internal communications approaches. You’ll manage compelling, impactful internal communications campaigns from brief to delivery that contribute to Wellcome’s organisation culture, support the delivery of our strategic objectives and inspire Wellcome’s employees to see the role they play in achieving our mission.

We are looking for someone who can:

  • Create, plan and deliver timely and effective communications to Wellcome employees.

  • Provide strategic communications advice and support to key teams across Wellcome, including on complex and sensitive topics.

  • Use evaluation and insight to develop effective communications, and to inform continuous improvement across the internal communications team.

  • Work effectively across Corporate Affairs to align internal communications with external, as part of a matrixed working environment.

  • Champion accessibility and inclusivity in the design and delivery of communications.

Is this job for me?

This is an exciting time to join the team in this newly created role, as we look to strengthen the connection between our employees and Wellcome’s mission, and implement new planning and evaluation approaches.

We’re looking for someone who can shape and make the role their own, finding opportunities for high quality communications campaigns across a range of channels to contribute to a great employee experience. This role will play a critical part in building relationships and providing strategic communications advice across Wellcome to help make this happen.

You’ll be the lead in the team on internal communications around our discovery and infectious disease programmes, as well as taking on a variety of operational projects.

To apply please upload your current CV and complete our short application form addressing your motivations and relevant skills for this role.

Minimum criteria:

  • Experience of delivering and executing multi-channel communications plans aimed at staff within a medium or large organisation, from briefing and leading communications planning through to delivery of content

  • Experience of advising and coaching colleagues on the best communications approaches to meet their internal communications objectives

  • Experience of operating in a complex stakeholder environment, building cross-org relationships and managing stakeholders with competing demands

  • Experience identifying and managing reputational risk, advising on sensitive or complex topics

  • Experience measuring and evaluating the success of internal communications activities, focusing on continuous improvement to improve effectiveness
