International Litigator   


ABOUT LAW 

 

Legal Action Worldwide is an independent non-profit association comprised of creative human rights lawyers and jurists, united in our belief that those who have experienced human rights violations and international crimes should receive targeted, survivor-centred, gender-competent and trauma-informed support to access the justice they deserveLAW’s team operates on the ground in conflict-affected contexts combining national and international expertise with a deep understanding of victim and survivor needs and wishes. We work directly with survivors and their communities, building their capacity to meaningfully engage with justice and advocacy processes. Alongside this, we provide technical assistance to strengthen justice institutions to ensure they are equipped to deliver the justice that survivors need, and work with legislators to promote accountability and the rule of law.  

  

Across 18 countries, and in collaboration with survivors, their communities and national justice actors, LAW undertakes creative accountability strategies, including strategic litigation at national, regional and international levels. LAW’s vision is "A world where all victims and survivors have access to justice, so that impunity is not a barrier to sustainable peace.  

 

THE ROLE  

 

We are seeking a committed and experienced International Litigator to join our team. In this pivotal role, you will work closely with the Programme Manager to lead the implementation of a groundbreaking project that provides legal support to both national and international NGO staff who have been victims of attacks.
You will bring strong legal
and litigation expertise in domestic and international criminal law and procedure, that ensures our work is impactful, principled, and responsive to the needs of affected communities.

Where?
The position will be based in LAW’s Geneva Office. Preferred the right to work in Switzerland.
 

 

Duration?
This position is funded for 12 months on a full-time basis. The possibility of extension is subject to funding. 

 

Salary:
Competitive salary (based on experience) plus benefits. 

   

The post holder will perform duties in accordance with the responsibilities outlined below:   


Legal 
 

  • Identify and build cases for submission to domestic, regional and international jurisdictions and human rights mechanisms. 
  • Support LAW’s investigations and litigation providing
    justice and accountability for victims and survivors of international crimes and human rights violations, including legal research, drafting, advice, and coordination
    . 
  • Conduct trauma-informed screenings and interviews of witnesses and survivors of these crimes and violations. 
  • Conduct open-source investigations on alleged attacks against humanitarian aid workers. 
  • Develop high-quality legal documents, including submissions, position papers, reports, concept notes, and legal briefs.
  • Provide regular updates and analysis on key contextual developments.
  • Proactively engage with the UN, national, humanitarian and other relevant stakeholders to advance legal assistance and representation. 
  • Support capacity building and training of legal and humanitarian actors and identify avenues for innovative learning opportunities
  • Monitor project activities, in collaboration with management, and coordinate, follow up, support and collate accurate and timely reporting. 



Advocacy and Communication  

  • Support the design of advocacy and communications strategies and engage in high-level advocacy on behalf of LAW’s clients and programmatic priorities, including the organisation of side events, workshops and roundtable.  
  • Draft a range of written materials, including news releases, op-eds, blog postings, policy analyses, and review reports and documents prepared by others.
    Ensure that the website and social media content related to our work is up to date and engaging audiences.
     


Any other tasks relevant to the position as requested. 
 


About You 

  • A bachelor's degree in law, Human Rights, or a related field.
    An advanced degree is preferred. 
     
  • Admitted to practice law in a national jurisdiction or proven track record of prosecutorial experience 
  • Minimum 4 years demonstrated experience as a criminal lawyer or prosecutor, litigating criminal cases and interviewing victims and witnesses. 
  • Direct experience working in complex humanitarian contexts, representing victims through the provision of legal aid services preferred. 
  • Demonstrated experience working on arrest and detention cases. 
  • Excellent legal research, drafting, and advocacy skills. 
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English.
    French and Arabic language skills would be an asset. 
  • Strong organisational skills, with the ability to prioritise effectively and meet tight deadlines. 
  • Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team
