We are looking for an Investment Accounting Controller to join our Investment Accounting team on a part time basis (4 days/week or 28 hours/week) across Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday.

Where in Wellcome will I be working?

Reporting into the Head of Financial Accounting, this role leads the investment accounting team within the financial accounting team. This role will be managing four investment accounting team members, including managers who specialise in specific asset classes and part qualified roles developing their investment accounting experience. This role works directly with Wellcome’s internal investments team and the other operational teams that support investments and external investment managers.

What will I be doing?

You will lead and develop a high-performing, inclusive investment accounting team, ensuring strong recruitment, retention and professional growth. Build trusted relationships with senior stakeholders, providing expert advice and constructive challenge on investment valuations, accounting and controls. Oversee technical accounting support for complex investment transactions, collaborating with Legal, Tax and Investment Operations teams to ensure investments are structured and implemented effectively.

As an Investment Accounting Controller, you will:

  • Lead investment accounting operations, including adjustments, reconciliations, controls, financial reporting, audit liaison, and management information analysis.

  • Oversee preparation of group and investment subsidiary financial statements, as well as financial reporting for bond issuances and ongoing rating agency requirements.

  • Manage investment valuation processes for annual reporting and performance measurement, including approvals, valuation themes, policies, procedures, and controls.

  • Provide robust challenge and oversight of third-party valuation experts across Venture, Private Equity, and Property asset classes.

  • Drive continuous improvements in investment accounting, valuation, risk, and control processes, ensuring new investments are integrated effectively into finance operations.

  • Foster an inclusive, collaborative culture while maintaining budget control, compliance with policies, and accountability for high quality team outputs.

Minimum Criteria:

  • Professionally qualified accountant (ACA, ACCA, CIMA, or equivalent) with strong investment accounting knowledge under UK GAAP or IFRS.

  • Experienced in investment valuation, particularly across private equity and property asset classes.

  • Proven people management and leadership skills, with experience leading complex, multi-stakeholder projects.

  • Strong analytical and communication abilities, with the capability to interpret evolving statutory guidance and provide clear expert conclusions.
