Junior Analyst, Climate & Energy Transition

Climate Policy Initiative
On-site
Jakarta DKI Jakarta Indonesia

About the organization

Climate Policy Initiative (CPI) works with governments, financial institutions, and businesses to drive economic growth and development while addressing climate risk and increasingly scarce natural resources. We help to improve the most important energy and land use policies around the world, with a particular focus on finance. CPI works in places that provide the most potential for policy impact, including Brazil, Europe, India, Indonesia, South Africa and the United States. Our work helps nations grow while addressing increasingly scarce resources and climate risk. This is a complex challenge in which policy plays a crucial role. CPI is a small but dynamic organization, with a global reach and an entrepreneurial culture. We work hard to maintain an idea-driven, collaborative environment across all our teams.

CPI’s Climate Finance program guides decision makers who are working to ensure economic growth while addressing increasingly scarce resources and climate risk. Enough capital exists to transition the world into a low-carbon, climate-resilient economy. However, current investment in climate-friendly development falls far short of the need. CPI works to redirect finance from high- to low-carbon activities and helps decision makers use their resources wisely. We provide much-needed information on climate finance flows, apply in-depth analysis to guide decision makers on their efforts, and support innovation in finance to address investors’ needs and lower costs.

In Indonesia, CPI partners with relevant ministries to understand, develop, and adjust fiscal policies and mechanisms that encourage the transition to a green economy and the optimal use of land and energy resources. In efforts to accelerate green investment, particularly in the energy sector, CPI works with public and private financing institutions.

Junior Analyst

Position Summary

Climate Policy Initiative (CPI) offers a dynamic and intellectually challenging environment, requiring independent thinking, practical problem-solving skills, and a strong interest in energy transition. The Junior Energy Technical Analyst will support the delivery of CPI’s growing portfolio of energy transition initiatives, particularly in Indonesia and Southeast Asia. The analyst will be part of a team that works at the intersection of finance, policy, and technology to accelerate the shift toward clean and sustainable energy systems.

CPI, known for its strength in climate finance, has increasingly been called upon to contribute to the energy transition agenda, leveraging its financial expertise to identify enabling conditions for mobilizing public and private investment. CPI plays a strategic role in advising government agencies, state-owned enterprises, international philanthropies, and private sector actors on transitioning away from coal and fossil fuel dependence—not only in the power sector but also in energy-intensive industries such as refineries and chemicals.

Under the supervision and guidance of the Country Director and Senior Analysts, the Junior Analyst will be expected to support project delivery with technically sound and applicable insights. The role demands a candidate who can bring real-world energy sector experience to the table—particularly in power generation and renewable energy technologies—and who can contribute to the development of feasible, technically grounded transition pathways. This includes asset-level assessments, energy system modelling, and techno-economic analyses that support the design of policies, financial instruments, and transition strategies.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

Includes the following and others as assigned:

  • Support technical assessments for CPI’s energy transition projects, including but not limited to asset-level and sectoral analysis across the power and industrial sectors, renewable energy integration, energy efficiency improvements, and hybrid system configurations.
  • Contribute to energy system modelling and analysis (e.g., capacity expansion, demand forecasting, technology performance simulations) to inform policy, financing strategies, and transition planning.
  • Compile, clean, and process technical datasets from multiple sources, including plant operational data, renewable resource assessments, and sectoral energy use profiles.
  • Contribute
to developing techno-economic analyses for a wide range of low-carbon technologies and transition pathways, covering both electricity generation and industrial applications.

  • Prepare clear technical outputs—including datasets, charts, maps, and scenario summaries—for integration into project deliverables and stakeholder communications.
  • Provide supporting inputs for stakeholder engagement activities, including technical background materials, data summaries, and responses to technical queries.
  • Collaborate with CPI’s finance, policy, and global teams by providing supporting technical inputs for analysis, modelling, and stakeholder-facing outputs.
  • Contribute to the preparation of proposals by supporting background research, technical scoping, and drafting relevant sections for new project opportunities.
  • Maintain awareness of developments in energy technologies, modelling methodologies, and policy frameworks relevant to CPI’s work to strengthen technical analysis capacity.

Qualification and Experience

  • Undergraduate degree in engineering, energy, environmental science, or a related technical field. Postgraduate is an advantage.
  • Relevant professional experience in the energy sector, ideally involving work with power generation, renewable energy, or industrial energy systems.
  • Experience handling technical datasets, including collection, cleaning, and organization for analysis.
  • Experience in technical assessments, feasibility studies, or project implementation in the power, renewable, or industrial energy sectors is an advantage.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and PowerPoint; working knowledge of other data analysis or visualization tools is a plus.
  • Good command of written and spoken Bahasa Indonesia and English.

Competencies & personal attributes

  • Good analytical and problem-solving capabilities, with the ability to work with both quantitative and qualitative information.
  • Solid understanding of energy systems and energy flows, including how different technologies and sectors interact within electricity and industrial systems.
  • Ability to interpret and explain energy modelling results and technical findings to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Capable of working effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team, contributing energy-related technical insights to finance and policy colleagues.
  • Capable of organizing and managing multiple tasks, timelines, and deliverables with reliability.
  • Attention to detail and commitment to accuracy, ensuring clarity and consistency in technical outputs.
  • Clear and concise communication skills, both written and verbal, in Bahasa Indonesia and English.
  • Adaptable, professional, and collaborative in engaging with colleagues and stakeholders across diverse backgrounds.

Desirable:

  • Hands-on experience in the real energy sector—such as work in a power plant, renewable energy project development, EPC firm, or industrial facility—providing practical understanding of operational and technical realities
  • Experience
in energy system modelling tools such as PLEXOS, PyPSA, LEAP,
    HOMER, or equivalent

  • Experience working in international environment including but not limited to multilateral organizations.
  • Ability to communicate complex qualitative and quantitative analyses to non-technical as well as expert audiences

CPI is hiring for one full-time Junior Energy Technical Analyst position, open immediately. The position will be based in Jakarta and may require occasional regional and international travel. CPI offers a competitive compensation and benefits package, with remuneration
commensurate with experience and aligned with CPI’s Competency Framework.
