Contract Type :  Initial 3 Months, Extendable up to 6 Months. 


Role Overview

Stand As My Witness was created in response to a growing trend in which civil society actors were arrested for their human rights work. Formerly known as Civil Society Behind Bars, the initiative is one of CIVICUS’ most effective strategies when it comes to sounding the alarm about the plights faced by HRDs around the world. As part of the campaign’s goal to spread awareness about some of the world’s imprisoned human rights defenders on their website.


The Learning and Communications Intern will support CIVICUS’ Stand As My Witness (SAMW) Campaign, an initiative advocating for the release of human rights defenders unjustly imprisoned around the world. This internship offers a unique opportunity to gain practical experience within CIVICUS’ Advocacy & Campaigns Cluster, contributing to global communication strategies and international campaigning efforts. 


Areas of Responsibilities & Key Activities

Communications and Visibility

  • Support the development of communications products that highlight the impact of the SAMW Campaign
  • Assist in monitoring and evaluating the effectiveness of communication strategies and campaigns.
  • Provide support in designing PowerPoint presentations, particularly ensuring alignment with CIVICUS branding, and assist with reviewing and applying branding guidelines.
  • Coordinate with the CIVICUS Communication Cluster to support the development and publication of communications materials.

Person Specification

Education, Language & Qualifications

  • A bachelor's degree in Communications, Development, Journalism, MEL, or a related field. 

Essential Knowledge, skills and Experience

  • Fluent written and spoken English; proficiency in additional Global South languages is an advantage. 
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to adapt messages for diverse audiences. 
  • Experience in designing and facilitating learning and collaborative initiatives.

Desirable Knowledge, skills and Experience

    • Experience working with the civic society organisations and in the human rights sector.  
    • Ability to work collaboratively in a multicultural and multidisciplinary team. 
    • Working knowledge of Spanish, Arabic, Portuguese, Russian or French is an advantage. 
    • Experience working with advanced Graphic design/Photoshop and audio/video editing software
      is an advantage.
