Legal Translator (Ukraine) - Consultancy

BACKGROUND

Legal Action Worldwide (LAW) is an independent non-profit organisation comprised of human rights lawyers and jurists, working in fragile and conflict-affected areas in Europe, the Middle East, Africa, and South Asia. We focus on gender equality, sexual and gender-based violence, rule of law, human rights, and transformative justice, working to bring justice to those who need it most. LAW has an office in Kyiv with six staff members.

LAW is seeking an individual or company to provide Legal Translation services under a under a consultancy contract to support our Ukraine programme. We are offering a framework agreement for a minimum of one year (renewable based on performance, mutual agreement, and subject to funding). Individual assignments with clear deliverables, timelines, and costs will be commissioned under the framework agreement.

Duration: 12 months renewable subject to performance and funding

Functions/Key Deliverables

Assignments may include but are not limited to:

• Translating legal and technical documents from Ukrainian into English and English into Ukrainian, including court submissions, witness statements, policy papers, and legislation.
• Providing real-time interpretation (consecutive or simultaneous) for meetings, interviews, or workshops, including sensitive or survivor-focused sessions.
• Ensuring accuracy, consistency, and legal terminology integrity across all translations.
• Reviewing and proofreading translations completed by others, where necessary.
• Coordinating with legal and programme staff to ensure proper understanding of context, nuance, and confidentiality requirements.
• Meeting agreed timelines and maintaining high standards of professional conduct and confidentiality.

Experience, Skills, and Qualifications Required

For individual consultants:

• University degree in translation, law, linguistics, or a relevant field.
• Minimum 5 years of professional experience translating and interpreting legal texts.
• Demonstrated understanding of legal terminology (Ukrainian and international law), particularly human rights, international criminal law, or gender-based violence.
• Strong attention to detail and ability to work under tight deadlines.
• Fluency in both Ukrainian and English (written and spoken).
• Prior work with legal teams, NGOs or international organisations is an asset.

For companies:

• Demonstrated track record of providing high-quality legal translation services.
• Capacity to assign experienced legal translators and interpreters to LAW’s projects.
• Description of internal quality control procedures and staff qualifications.
• Ability to ensure confidentiality and deliver within agreed timelines.
