SCOPE OF POSITION:

The mandate of the Communications team is to lead and support Oxfam Canada’s public engagement and communications work, including branding, social media and media. It is charged with leading Oxfam Canada’s organizational communications initiatives, developing our digital strategies and is the steward of the Oxfam Canada brand. It is responsible for showcasing Oxfam Canada’s international programs to the Canadian public and providing marketing and communications support to fundraising, advocacy and campaigning initiatives.  Ultimately, the team’s objective is to attract and engage Oxfam Canada supporters and the Canadian public through dynamic digital content and story-telling in our work to tackle poverty, fight inequality and promote women’s rights. 

 

Under the direction of the Director, Policy, Campaigns & Communications, the Manager, Communications leads the development and execution of Oxfam Canada’s Communications strategy and supports the Communications team to develop and deliver on the objectives and work plan of the department. The Manager, Communications oversees financial and human resources to deliver the department’s objectives.

    

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES: (This is not an exhaustive list of duties to be performed)

 

Team Management and Planning

  • Lead, mentor, motivate and provide clear direction to the Communications team.
  • Oversee the development of team and individual work plans, line manage, and conduct performance evaluations for all team members.
  • Oversee the hiring and onboarding of new Communications team staff.
  • Foster a positive team environment, and provides team building and professional development initiatives.
  • Provide leadership and advocate on key issues related to the communications strategy.
  • Liaise with other departments in Oxfam Canada to promote linkages between the program and public fundraising, policy and campaigns and communications initiatives.
  • Oversee and support staff to manage communication project budgets, including leading annual team departmental budgeting processes, monitoring disbursements of project funds and ensuring accurate and timely financial reporting on all projects.
  • Contribute to Oxfam Canada-wide strategic initiatives and operational projects as required.
  • Work closely with the Fund Development Department to optimize our marketing strategies and support implementation, with the specific goal of growing and engaging our supporters.
  • Participate in the Public Engagement Coordination Team at Oxfam Canada.



Communications Strategy and Brand Management

  • Ensure development and execution of Oxfam Canada’s overarching Public Engagement and Communications Strategy, including media and social media, content creation and story-telling, supporter growth and website development.
  • Ensure delivery of dynamic content and compelling stories of Oxfam Canada’s work and its impact.
  • Support team to deliver priority communications assets and products.
  • Liaise with other departments to identify communications support needs and triage requests.
  • Support the development of the communication strategy and plan for the Executive Director.
  • Review key communication materials prior to publication for quality control and to ensure consistent messaging and tone.
  • Serve as the primary point person for communications-related issues, ensuring the Director is kept well informed and issues are appropriately escalated.
  • Support the Executive Director and Senior Management Team with crisis communications when necessary.
  • Ensure the impact of our work is communicated in support of raising Oxfam Canada’s rating with Charity Intelligence.
  • Ensure all content is compliant with global accessibility standards and meets branding and ethical guidelines.

 REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, KNOWLEDGE & COMPETENCIES:


  • Minimum 7 years of experience in communications, marketing and/or public relations. Non-profit experience is an asset.
  • Post-secondary degree or diploma, preferably in journalism or communications.
  • Proven skills in team leadership with a diverse team.
  • Demonstrated experience working in and with a team contributing to a positive work environment.
  • Demonstrated commitment to, and interest in, women’s rights, global development and/or humanitarian issues.
  • Knowledge of and experience with best practices in communications, journalism and/or marketing.
  • Experience with crisis communications is an asset.
  • Experience with traditional media and social media.
  • Knowledge of various digital communication platforms.
  • Superior writing and communication skills.
  • Experience working in a cross-organizational and cross-functional manner.
  • Experience working in complex organizations.
  • Exceptional English verbal and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to organize, prioritize work and manage multiple projects with high efficiency, accuracy and enthusiasm.
  • Willingness to sign and abide by Oxfam’s Code of Conduct.
  • Demonstrated commitment to feminism, anti-racism, justice, equity, diversity and inclusion.
  • Ability to travel internationally, often in difficult circumstances.
