Safer Chemicals Project
Pew’s Safer Chemicals Project aims to measurably reduce Americans’ exposure to harmful endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs). The project focuses on reducing exposure to the most harmful EDCs in use in the near-term, while laying the foundation for longer-term policy reform to prevent additional harmful EDCs from being introduced. The Safer Chemicals Project is a collaboration between Pew’s Environment and Government Performance portfolios.
The Environment Portfolio focuses on science-based, nonpartisan, and sustainable solutions to help protect the planet and people. We work in partnership with governments, Indigenous rights holders, intergovernmental organizations, non-governmental organizations, local stakeholders, scientists, and other researchers to advance public policy so that nature and communities can thrive.
The Government Performance portfolio provides the nonpartisan research, solutions, and momentum decisionmakers need to ensure our institutions improve the health of people in the United States and enable them to successfully climb the economic ladder. Those goals are pursued through a wide range of the portfolio’s policy-focused projects (with explorations into new areas underway)—from ensuring states’ finances are prepared for future volatility, to unlocking gateways to mental health care, to addressing the nation’s lack of attainable housing.
Position Overview
The Manager, Public Policy, Safer Chemicals Project, will report to the Project Director, Public Policy, and will lead a team that provides coordination and support to the state and federal policy teams that support agenda planning, research support, meeting materials development, and campaign deliverables and milestones tracking. The Manager will work closely with other policy staff, as well as partner closely with the cross-cutting team within the project and relevant program department teams and operations units as relevant.
This position is based in Pew’s Washington, D.C. office and participates in Pew’s hybrid work program with core days in the office and the flexibility to telework the remaining days. Staff also enjoy four telework “flex weeks” per year.
Responsibilities
Lead a team that provides coordination and support to the state and federal policy teams that support agenda planning, research support, meeting materials development, and campaign deliverables and milestones tracking.
Manage and mentor members of the team, including day-to-day leadership and ongoing professional development.
Assign resources by determining the appropriate fit between project needs and staff member interest, capacity, and skill.
Develop and maintain knowledge of the science, policies, and politics of endocrine disrupting chemicals and develop mechanisms to analyze policy opportunities.
Assist the Project Director in implementing effective outreach strategies and setting achievable and measurable goals.
Liaise with program department teams, including legal, government relations, program coordination and services, program planning and development, and core operations units (e.g., finance, human resources) on behalf of the public policy team.
Together with the Project Director, Public Policy, provide strategic oversight and management of research projects, event planning and coordination, convenings, and other special projects for the policy teams.

Requirements
Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience required; an advanced degree in public or environmental policy, or equivalent experience is strongly preferred.
Generally, a minimum of 8 years of professional experience, including staff, project, and/or consultant management experience, with a proven track record of people management and accomplishment in developing and implementing solutions to complex problems.
Strong strategic and analytical acumen with proven skills in taking initiative, developing, executing and evaluating a range of diverse projects. A task-oriented, deadline-driven style with a focus on achieving clear and ambitious goals. Capacity to develop and move projects forward with a high degree of independence and autonomy.
Sophisticated project management experience, with demonstrated track record working across thematic and institutional workstreams.
Demonstrated acumen for exercising sound business judgement at all times.
Experience managing projects in dispersed geographies. Capacity to develop and manage productive relationships with consultants, partners, and others who contribute to the development of a project by anticipating possible outcomes.
Experience with environmental health issues preferred.
Strong oral and written communications skills. Experience synthesizing material and focusing quickly on the essence of an issue and the means to address it.
Well-developed skills in diplomacy. Works productively with a wide array of different people and institutions that frequently disagree with and may be in competition with one another.
Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills. Must be flexible, creative, and consistent and assume high accountability for all areas of responsibility.
Strong people manager with proven experience adapting quickly, deploying talent flexibly, and supporting the professional growth of team and colleagues.
Seasoned judgment: an aptitude to make appropriate decisions, justify recommendations, and be responsive, clear and firm with colleagues and partners.
Fluency in English is essential and competence in other languages is desirable.
Travel
This position requires occasional domestic and international travel for meetings and conferences.

Salary Range
$129,200 USD - $144,400 USDThe salary range represents a reasonable estimate of the annual salary based on Pew’s commitment to provide equitable and market-competitive pay. The actual salary offered will take into consideration many factors including but not limited to job-related knowledge, skills and experience, internal pay equity, and business need.
