The Explorer Engagement team identifies, develops, and elevates the Society’s extensive community of National Geographic Explorers – researchers, conservationists, educators, technologists, and storytellers. They empower our global network of Explorers through funding, training and mentorship, community activation, elevation of Explorers, and access to technology, as well as other resources and opportunities designed to accelerate the impact of these passionate changemakers.Your Impact
Responsibilities Include
Engineering Design & Manufacturing: 40%
Leads the design, development, and optimization of manufacturing processes to ensure efficiency, quality, and safety.
Researches, evaluates and makes recommendations on those processes for manufacturing Exploration Technology products.
Evaluates cost, time and other factors to make recommendations on in-house vs out-sourced fabrication.
Performs Mechanical design and design for manufacture (DFM). Prepares 3D Models of parts using computer-aided design (CAD). Creates and manages design documentation.
Creates computer-aided manufacturing (CAM) profiles for Computer Numerical Control (CNC) machines and 3D printers to produce parts with in-house tools.
Uses shop tools and resources to fabricate components and assemblies.
Testing and Quality Assurance: 15%
Assures product and process quality by developing and implementing relevant testing processes and documenting the results for future reference or development.
Collaborates with supply chain and quality teams to ensure supplier processes meet internal requirements.
Conducts QAQC studies, root cause investigations, and implements corrective actions to resolve product issues.
Shop Manager: 15%
Manages the Exploration Technology Rapid Prototyping Machine Shop . Ensures machinery and tooling maintenance and repair to keep all resources in good working order. Primary responsibility for general shop upkeep and cooperation with NGP staff using the facility.
Ensures that we have the most efficient tools for our needs, and when needed lead on research and purchasing of manufacturing equipment, tools, and fixtures.
Leads role for Exploration Technology on maintaining safety and OSHA compliance in the Shop. Works with NGS Director of Security, Health & Safety to establish standards and guidelines for Exploration Technology facilities and tools in line with organization-wide standards. Controls access and authorizes entry to the facility. Authors and updates shop safety documentation. Sources and maintains personal protection equipment.
Responsible for developing and managing Exploration Technology shop operations annual budget.
Procurement: 15%
Leads the Exploration Technology Lab on Procurement, including setting up Lab accounts with the preferred vendors, developing and maintaining relationships with all the Lab suppliers for the different specialties to get the best possible technical and commercial offers when needed.
Serves as primary point of contact (POC) with NGS Purchasing and Accounts Payable teams to ensure purchasing processes are conducted efficiently and follow NGS policies. Manage all the related procurement documents and coordinate the payment requests to the suppliers and vendors for the products and services they deliver to the company.
Product Line Management: 15%
Leads the operations team product management of a set of Ex Tech created products. Tasks include: construction and first line of defence technical servicing, training for users, and ongoing support of users during field deployments.
Supports other products and projects as needed.
What You’ll Bring
Educational Background
Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in Mechanical Engineering
Minimum Years and Type of Experience
5+ years experience in Mechanical design and Machining/Manufacturing.
Necessary Knowledge and Skills
Advanced knowledge of CAD 3D modeling software, Autodesk Inventor or Fusion 360 preferred.
Advanced knowledge in computer-aided manufacturing (CAM) programming.
Proficiency with 3D printers and processes.
Advanced knowledge in the operation of common machine tools: vertical mill, lathe, shears, benders, saws, grinders, and drills - C&C and manual operation.
Experience with budget management and purchasing.
Experience with common office software, MS word, Excel, Google Docs.
Supervision
No direct reports.

The salary range for this position accounts for a wide range of factors including but not limited to organizational need; specific skill sets; experience and training; certifications; and more. At the National Geographic Society, individuals are typically hired at or near the starting point of the salary range for their role, and compensation decisions are dependent on the facts and circumstances of each case.

Job Designation
Resident - Our Resident category recognizes that certain staff need to be physically present at Base Camp to do their work. Some Resident staff must be at Base Camp every day to do their jobs, while others may only need to be physically present onsite some of the time to meet looming deadlines or to get work done and may require a unique schedule. As such, this category has been revised to provide maximum flexibility depending on what’s required for each individual role. The days Resident staff come into the office will be determined by their teams and workflow, and they should work with their supervisors to determine their specific schedule. And throughout the year, their schedule may be adjusted based on cyclical work cycles, deadlines, and/or ebbs and flows of work.Candidates must be legally authorized to work in the United States.
