How You’ll Contribute

The Cleaner will work under the supervision of the Facility Services Manager and Custodial Supervisor to perform a variety of custodial duties for National Geographic’s headquarters at Base Camp, including the National Geographic Museum.

Responsibilities Include:

  • Clean bathrooms and restock paper supplies daily. Standard bathroom procedures are to damp wipe glass surfaces, empty waste baskets, service soap and toilet paper dispensers, dust sills, clean tile walls, shelves, stall partitions, sweep/mop/scrub floors, etc. Monitors possible defects such as clogged urinals and lights out, and reports to supervisors. Collect building trash and compost daily, placing it in approved containers and placing it in designated collection areas for subsequent removal. Replace liners in waste baskets and trash containers per specs. Monitors possible defects such as clogged urinals and lights out, and reports to supervisors. (40%)

  • Providing impeccable service to internal customers and museum visitors by being knowledgeable about the Museum, proactively helpful to those who need guidance or assistance while visiting the museum or the Base Camp complex, demonstrating the highest quality of polite, friendly, and courteous customer service. What You’ll Bring

Minimum Education Required

GED or High School diploma preferred but not required.

Minimum Years and Type of Experience

At least three years of work experience. Proven working experience in relevant field Ability to work independently with minimal supervisor and remain motivated.

Necessary Knowledge and Skills

  • Ability to work any day of the week including Saturday and/or Sunday, holidays, and early morning or late evening special events

  • Able to take direction, work with minimal supervision, and function cooperatively as part of a team

  • Able to follow and provide both oral and written instructions

  • Able to follow through and carry out work orders

  • Must be reliable, thorough, observant, very organized, flexible, and courteous

  • Ability to use cleaning tools and equipment

  • Use a portable vacuum cleaner – back pack style

The salary range for this position accounts for a wide range of factors including but not limited to organizational need; specific skill sets; experience and training; certifications; and more. At the National Geographic Society, individuals are typically hired at or near the starting point of the salary range for their role, and compensation decisions are dependent on the facts and circumstances of each case.

The rate for this position is $19.00.

Job Designation

Resident - Our Resident category recognizes that certain staff need to be physically present at Base Camp to do their work. Some Resident staff must be at Base Camp every day to do their jobs, while others may only need to be physically present onsite some of the time to meet looming deadlines or to get work done and may require a unique schedule. As such, this category has been revised to provide maximum flexibility depending on what’s required for each individual role. The days Resident staff come into the office will be determined by their teams and workflow, and they should work with their supervisors to determine their specific schedule. And throughout the year, their schedule may be adjusted based on cyclical work cycles, deadlines, and/or ebbs and flows of work.
