BADIL | The Alternative Policy Institute (BADIL) is pleased to invite applications for its Non- Resident Fellowship Program, a year-long fellowship designed to advance justice-driven, evidence-based policy and journalism in Lebanon and Syria, as well as the wider West Asia and North Africa (WANA) region.

Through this fellowship, BADIL seeks to harness the expertise of global professionals committed to promoting progressive and sustainable change across its thematic focus areas. Fellows will contribute original research and commentary that shape public discourse, influence policymaking, and challenge entrenched narratives. The fellowship can be pursued in a hybrid or fully remote format. While we encourage candidates to be based in the WANA region and the countries they cover, we also welcome applications from those who wish to participate remotely.

Objectives of the Fellowship

The Non-Resident Fellowship Program provides a platform for thought leaders and

practitioners to:

  • Produce Timely Commentary: Offer swift, insightful responses to unfolding developments, shaping how critical issues are understood.
  • Develop In-Depth Analysis: Deliver long-form analytical work that brings nuance and balance to debates in Lebanon and Syria and the wider WANA on the region’s most pressing challenges.
  • Prescribe Policy Solutions: Craft actionable, justice-centered policy recommendations designed to influence decision-makers and stakeholders.
  • Produce Investigative Reports: Uncover hidden dynamics and bring to light underreported realities through evidence-based, impactful investigative journalism.

Applicants are invited to engage with one or more of BADIL’s core thematic nexi+

approaches:

  • Humanitarian-Development-Peace Nexus (+Historical Justice)
  • Water-Energy-Food-Ecosystems Nexus (+Climate Justice)
  • Gender-Equality-Inclusion Nexus (+Social Justice)

Eligibility

  • Demonstrated expertise in at least one of BADIL’s thematic areas.
  •  A strong record of publishing analysis, commentary, or policy-oriented work, with a minimum of 5 years of professional experience.
  • Strong proficiency in English with working proficiency in Arabic highly desirable
  • Master's degree in public policy, political science, international development, journalism, economics, or a related field.
  • Commitment to advancing justice in Lebanon, Syria and the wider WANA region.
