The Center for AI Safety Action Fund (CAIS Action Fund) is a nonpartisan advocacy organization dedicated to advancing public policies that maintain U.S. leadership in AI and protect against AI-related national security threats.

About The Role

We're hiring a Policy Lead to lead the development of our U.S. public policy strategy. Reporting to the Executive Director. This senior role sits at the intersection of technology and national security, requiring deep policy expertise and the ability to navigate a fast-moving policy landscape. You will serve as CAIS Action Fund's policy voice with the federal government and Congress. This role is based in Washington, DC.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the design of our US policy strategy, ensuring alignment with organizational priorities.
  • Draft and shape legislative and regulatory proposals, translating policy objectives into concrete policy text and technical input for lawmakers and their staff.
  • Distill complex technical policy into compelling narratives for leadership.
  • Build and maintain relationships with key government stakeholders, as well as the technical policy community. This includes policy leaders in AI labs and think tanks.
  • Track legislation, hearings, and regulatory developments in real time.
  • Coordinate closely with the affiliated 501(c)(3), to ensure alignment across research and advocacy.

About You

  • 5–10 years of experience in public policy or national security, whether in congressional offices, federal agencies, or think tanks.
  • Preferred: Prior service with the House or Senate Intelligence or Armed Services Committees, the Intelligence Community (IC), or the Department of War (DOW).
  • Experience developing policy positions, briefing materials, RFPs, and strategic analyses for senior decision-makers.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to operate effectively in fast-scaling ambiguous environments.
  • A genuine passion for the potential of artificial intelligence (AI) and belief that it has the potential to profoundly benefit the world, provided that we can develop and use it safely.

Compensation & Benefits

Salary: $150,000 – $170,000 a year
