Policy Lead, Trust & Safety

Bluesky
Remote friendly (USA)
Worldwide
Bluesky's vision is to make social more like the web itself. We're building a social media app, but beyond that, we've created a protocol that supports a broad ecosystem of applications and clients. Imagine a network of applications — from microblogging to photos to video to long-form writing — all interconnected and accessible with a shared identity.

As Policy Lead for Trust & Safety, you’ll shape the foundation of Bluesky’s community guidelines — and transform them into actionable, enforceable policy. You’ll define how safety and expression coexist on Bluesky, collaborating with moderation operations, product, and engineering teams to design policy systems that scale responsibly. This role combines deep policy knowledge and expertise with operational rigor and technical fluency.

This role is scoped as a 1 year contract with possibility of extension.

Key Responsibilities

Policy Development & Governance
  • Translate high-level principles into clear, enforceable rules for moderators and users.
  • Draft, refine, and maintain Bluesky’s Community Guidelines and detailed policy documentation for each area of enforcement.
  • Monitor emerging edge cases and lead deliberation on complex or precedent-setting moderation decisions. Brief leadership when on high profile decisions.
  • Maintain an internal policy library and wiki that documents rationales, enforcement criteria, and escalation paths.

Implementation & Systems Integration
  • Partner with Engineering and Product to embed policy logic into moderation workflows, labeling systems, and automated enforcement tools.
  • Develop and maintain enforcement templates to inform users of violations and account status clearly and consistently.
  • Collaborate with moderation operations on QA processes and golden set data to calibrate both human and automated enforcement.

Policy Evaluation & Strategy
  • Lead post-incident reviews to evaluate policy efficacy after major enforcement events or crises.
  • Contribute to transparency reports and internal accountability reviews.
  • Develop long-term policy roadmaps that anticipate emerging risks, regulatory changes, and shifts in platform behavior.

What We’re Looking For

  • 3-5 years of deep experience in Trust & Safety and policy development.
  • Strong ability to balance platform safety, user expression, and technical feasibility.
  • Experience collaborating cross-functionally with legal, product, and engineering teams.
  • Clear, empathetic written communicator who can translate complex safety principles into understandable guidance for both users and staff.
  • Strategic, detail-oriented, and comfortable working in an ambiguous, high-growth environment.

We’re a fully remote team, but an overlap of working hours with PST is required, and for this role, proximity and willingness to travel to Seattle is a plus. We offer health, dental, and vision insurance. If you want to work with an excellent team and help define the future of social, we encourage you to apply.
