PPCA Diplomatic Engagement Lead, London, Brussels or Berlin

The advertised position is with the Powering Past Coal Alliance (PPCA) Secretariat, hosted by E3G and will be based in one of the E3G offices in London, Brussels or Berlin. The successful candidate will lead the diplomatic engagement team and use their political and diplomatic skills to develop a strategy to work with existing and prospective government members of the PPCA to drive faster progress on the transition from coal to clean energy.

 

Background

The Powering Past Coal Alliance (PPCA) is a global coalition of national and sub-national governments, businesses and organisations working to advance the transition away from unabated coal power generation.

 

In our diplomatic work, we build momentum for a faster transition away from coal by working with existing government members and civil society partners to encourage national and subnational governments to make new commitments to accelerate their coal phase out. We also work with existing government members to advocate for progress on an accelerated coal phase out at international diplomatic events including G7, G20 and COP.

 

You will report directly to the PPCA Head of Secretariat and you will oversee the work and development of the Diplomatic Engagement team, providing coaching and guidance.  You will be part of a highly dynamic, impact-driven international team of the PPCA Secretariat. You will also have an opportunity to closely collaborate with the Alliance’s co-chairs, the governments of Canada and the United Kingdom, and with other core partners of the PPCA including the EU, Germany and France..


Key Responsibilities

  • Develop the PPCA’s strategy for engagement with potential new government members.
  • Develop PPCA’s strategy for mobilising existing members to advocate for an accelerated transition from coal to clean through their diplomatic networks.
  • Develop strategy for PPCA’s efforts to make progress on coal to clean agenda through international diplomatic events and opportunities eg G7, G20 and COP.
  • Oversee the work and support the development of the PPCA Secretariat Diplomatic Engagement team.
  • Play a leading role in building an inclusive, creative and learning orientated culture in the PPCA Secretariat.

 

Person Description 

We are looking for a talented communicator and networker with demonstrated experience working internationally and engaging government stakeholders. You will need to be able to think creatively and build diverse coalitions to develop effective influencing strategies in countries that currently see coal power generation as a core part of their economic and energy security. 

 

Experience and Skills

Essential Experience:

  • At least 10 years experience working on international diplomacy in government, or working closely with governments.
  • Demonstrated interest in the core mission and values of the PPCA.
  • Management experience and an interest in playing a leading role in building an inclusive, creative and learning orientated working environment.
  • Demonstrated experience in building or facilitating a network of diverse stakeholders.
  • Effective communicator with political and diplomatic tact.

 

Desirable Experience:

  • Experience working on energy transition and climate issues.
  • Experience of engaging with governments in emerging economies especially in South and South East Asia.
  • Additional language skills welcome.

Berlin 

  • The indicative salary range in
    Berlin is
    €69,496 - €75,000
    annually, dependant on experience. 
  • BahnCard50 travel cover. 


 

Brussels 

  • The indicative salary range in Brussels is 4,762.28 to €5,100.57
    monthly reference, dependant on experience, with holiday pay and a 13th month.
     
  • Mobile phone and contract, lunch and eco vouchers, hospitalisation and travel insurance, travel expense reimbursement (bicycle or public transport). 

 

London 

  • The indicative salary range in London is £62,825 - £67,000
    annually, dependant on experience.
     
  • Cycling scheme 

 

E3G is unable to provide any relocation assistance to candidates who would need to move in order to take up this position.    

 

E3G will require candidates to demonstrate that they have the right to live in the relevant E3G office location.
