The Storytelling team works to expand the organization’s impact through journalism, photography, film/video, web content, mapping, asset management, and data visualization. As one of the largest funders to individual storytellers in this work, it also identifies key grantmaking and fellowship opportunities with creative talent. Much of the team's programmatic activity is focused on identifying and building capacity for the next generation of diverse storytellers.

As the largest funder to individual storytellers in this work, it also identifies key grantmaking and fellowship opportunities with creative talent. The division’s Impact Story Lab builds on National Geographic’s legacy as a global leader in using storytelling to drive positive change. We partner with Explorers to produce world-class film, audio, photography, VR/AR experiences, and other media that further the goals of NGS programs. By combining creative excellence with groundbreaking research, we advance the field of “impact media” and contribute to National Geographic Society’s mission of illuminating and protecting the wonder of our world.

The Impact Story Lab Producer I, Base Camp Media develops and produces a diverse portfolio of media for National Geographic’s Museum of Exploration. Under the supervision of the Sr. Producer, Base Camp, the Producer creates video, photo, and emerging media content and manages projects from development to delivery ensuring that all media reflects the standards of National Geographic and meets the goals of the project.

Your Impact

Responsibilities include:

Creative Producing and Editing: Produce and edit media that meets the highest National Geographic standards, bringing new creative ideas to every project. Under the supervision of the Sr. Producer, Base Camp, develop and execute projects independently through all phases of production including pre-production and planning, writing, field work, editing, and post. (40%)

Project Management: Under the supervision of the Sr. Producer, Base Camp and in collaboration with ISL senior team the Production and Operations Manager, manage all aspects of production so that projects adhere to schedule and budget. Coordinate production logistics and oversee Associate Producers, Field Crew, Photographers, and Editors assigned to the project. Ensure all projects deliver on time and on budget, and that all deliverables, including original assets and legal binders, are properly archived. Guide internal and external partners through the entire production process, including managing feedback. (30%)

Creative and Technical Production: Execute hands-on production tasks as necessary and able, including photography, videography, audio recording, editing, graphics, music composition. (30%)


What You’ll Bring

Educational Background

Bachelor’s degree with coursework in media production as well subjects aligned with National Geographic’s focus areas.

Minimum Years and Types of Experience

4+ years media production experience with 1+ year of producer level experience

Necessary Knowledge and Skills

  • A record of ambitious, innovative visual storytelling for major media outlets

  • Deep knowledge of multiple media disciplines

  • Proficiency in at least one creative skill (writing, cinematography, video editing, graphics, etc.). Preferred proficiency in video editing and post production.

  • In-depth knowledge of science, geography, culture, and conservation, and the ability to communicate these topics across multiple platforms including major media outlets

  • Knowledge of standard media production workflows

  • Excellent written, verbal, communication, collaboration and interpersonal skills

  • Adobe Creative Suite, Microsoft Office, & Google Workspace software

  • Experience in content production within the museum space preferred

Salary Information

The National Geographic Society offers a competitive and holistic total rewards package. Our compensation structure and transparent pay philosophy are based on industry-specific market data for similar-sized nonprofit organizations.

The salary range for this position accounts for a wide range of factors including but not limited to organizational need; specific skill sets; experience and training; certifications; and more. At the National Geographic Society, individuals are typically hired at or near the starting point of the salary range for their role, and compensation decisions are dependent on the facts and circumstances of each case.

The salary range for this position is $77,900 - $82,000.

Job Designation

Resident - Our Resident category recognizes that certain staff need to be physically present at Base Camp to do their work. Some Resident staff must be at Base Camp every day to do their jobs, while others may only need to be physically present onsite some of the time to meet looming deadlines or to get work done and may require a unique schedule. As such, this category has been revised to provide maximum flexibility depending on what’s required for each individual role. The days Resident staff come into the office will be determined by their teams and workflow, and they should work with their supervisors to determine their specific schedule. And throughout the year, their schedule may be adjusted based on cyclical work cycles, deadlines, and/or ebbs and flows of work.
