Programme Manager, Operations, London or Berlin
E3G is seeking an experienced Programme Manager to join the Operations team during an exciting period of strategic transformation. The role will be based in one of our E3G offices in London or Berlin. The role will act as a trusted business partner to the programme teams, to ensure alignment between strategic objectives of the organisation and the deliverables and outcomes of grants. and resource management. You will lead cross-functional initiatives, coordinate teams and resourcing and shape the execution of programmes that actively shape the policy and politics of climate change. Key Responsibilities
- Shape the future – support the development of new grants by providing programme teams with expertise in resource planning, proposal development and maintaining strong relationships with funders to build programmes that are strategically aligned and deliver impact.
- Bring excellence and an innovative mindset – Be part of the centre of excellence on programme management for a leading climate think tank by modernising and developing cross-organisational processes, guidance and tools that help embed best practice in programme management. Be at the frontier of how E3G innovates its approach to managing our programmes and leverages new and emerging technology to increase our efficiency and amplify our impact as a think tank.
- Empower and connect people– Build cross-organisational relationships with programme and operations teams and senior management to enable a whole-of -organisation approach to managing programmes. Support team coordination for the programme teams by coordinating team rhythms, weekly check-ins, strategy sessions, tracking resources to keep teams aligned and empowered.
- Smart Resourcing and planning – Support the programme (petal) teams in planning their key activities and deliverables. Collaborate with finance colleagues to maintain management of budgets and financial resources, to understand opportunity costs and manage risk to deliver value and increase efficiency.
- Maintain the detail – Manage contracts, funder and audit requirements, shared data, external funder portals and workspaces.
- Be at the centre of the organisation – Support ad hoc operational needs, maintain the organisation’s governance structures and control mechanisms as part of the wider operations teams. Help deliver ad hoc programme outputs – such as events, convenings, blogs etc.
- Tell our story – Prepare and present internal and external reports to showcase our impact and capture our progress for both our funders and key stakeholders.
Person Description
The role of the Programme Manager will be integral to supporting the management and delivery of multiple grants across one or more programme areas. Business partnering with our programmes, you will be at the forefront of recalibrating the organisation at a time of strategic change to ensure that we remain at the frontier of climate politics and policy. Reporting to the Programme Finance Manager with matrix reporting to programme, transformation and operations teams you will embed a new approach to programme management and lead the organisation to operational excellence.
Experience and Skills
The successful candidate will have the following:
Essential Experience:
- At least three/five years’ experience managing organisational programmes and/or international grants, including government grants.
- Knowledge of a variety of project and programme management tools, methodologies, and best practice. e.g., and ideally Agile or Prince 2 or similar professional certification.
- Resource Management experience: including budget management, risk management, financial forecasting and bringing a strong commercial acumen to the team
- Strategic intelligence: experience in aligning portfolios to our strategic objectives and help execute decision-makers intent.
- Organisational skills: ability to plan in a fast-paced complex environment, ability to prioritise, multi-task and meet deadlines.
- Strong emotional intelligence: ability to build trust and influence key stakeholders (internal and external) and proactively navigate tensions and ambiguity whilst working with complexity.
- Adept at presenting clear, accessible work in written form and presenting ideas clearly and credibly with colleagues.
- Experience in international environments, particularly working across different cultures and time zones.
- Excellent IT skills, including MS Word, Excel, Outlook etc.
- Excellent written and spoken English language skills, additional language skills welcome.
- Experience in taking a data-driven approach to programme management.
- Budget management experience and/or qualifications, including financial forecasting and spend reporting bringing strong commercial acumen to the team.
- Highly organised, with the ability to plan, prioritise, multi-task and meet deadlines.
- Adept at presenting clear, accessible work in written form and presenting ideas clearly and credibly with colleagues.
- Experience in international environments, particularly working across different cultures and time zones.
- Excellent IT skills, including MS Word, Excel, Outlook etc.
- Excellent written and spoken English language skills, additional language skills welcome.
- Relevant professional experience in energy, climate or sustainability related field would be an advantage.
Desirable Experience:
- Experience in taking a data-driven approach to programme management. Experience in leveraging data, emerging technology and systems intelligence to scale our impact.
- Experience in change management and transformation programmes
- Skills in communication, motivation and role modelling to help deliver transformative action across the organisation.

- E3G offers a reward and benefits package which compares well with other organisations within our sector. The indicative salary range in the UK for this position is up to £42,435 - £45,000 and Berlin €59,237 - €63,500 dependant on experience.

E3G is unable to provide any relocation assistance to candidates who would need to move in order to take up this position. Occasional international travel may be required from time to time.
