Nonviolent Peaceforce (NP) is a dynamic, international non-governmental organisation. We protect civilian in situations of violent conflict using unarmed strategies, we build peace side by side with local communities and we advocate for the wider adoption of these approaches to safeguard human lives and dignity.


OVERVIEW

Nonviolent Peaceforce (NP) is an international, non-governmental organization based in Geneva, Switzerland, that has been working in Myanmar since 2012 to protect civilians and strengthen local peace structures through Unarmed Civilian Protection (UCP). NP work side by side with local civil society and conflict-affected communities across Northwest Region of Myanmar– to deter violence and build sustainable protection mechanisms. NP’s work includes providing protective accompaniment to at-risk civilians and organizations, armed actor engagement and dialogue for the release of political prisoners, monitoring, reporting and responding on safety concerns raised by community members, facilitating safe spaces for inclusive dialogue and community-led conflict resolution, supporting the creation of Early Warning and Early Response (EWER) systems, and provide capacity enhancement to local leaders and networks in UCP methodologies. Through these efforts, NP helps ensure that civilian protection remains central to protection, peace, and social cohesion initiatives in conflict-affected areas.

JOB SUMMARY

In coordination with Project Coordinator, the Project Assistant is responsible for providing technical assistance to the community volunteers in building their capacity for self- protection and community protection through unarmed strategies. She/he will lead relationship building initiative with key actors within his/her communities, this includes but not limited to armed actors, religious and traditional leaders, business leaders and community leaders. The PA will lead the implementation of field activities in collaboration with PC and volunteers. The Project Assistant will be based in Magway, Chin and Mandalay and involves frequent travel to within the project sites



KEY RESPONSIBILITIES


Project Implementation

  • In coordination with the Project Coordinator and appropriate field site representatives, collect and collate all field reports ensuring timeliness and integrity and consistency thereof including consistent adherence to verification standards.
  • Support the Project Coordinator in organizing and coordinating the overall operational activities in accordance with the project proposal.
  • Assist in the preparation of a support strategy in coordination with local partners and consultations with Nonviolent Peaceforce’s security focal person in case of emergency.
  • Ensure that project activities are implemented in accordance to the project proposal, log frame and monitoring Terms of References.
  • Maintain liaison with community and partners.
  • Assist the Project Coordinator in ensuring all activities are implemented within the allocated budget.
  • Help prepare quarterly and yearly reports.
  • Provide translation (Burmese, and English) in written documents and training activities.
  • Provide verbal and written translations as needed.
  • Liaise with other NP partners in Yangon/Kale/Magway as instructed by Project Coordinator.
  • Perform other duties as instructed by Project Coordinator.

Internal Coordination

  • At the Project Coordinator’s direction, act as a liaison between the finance and administration departments and the project field sites to ensure proper and clear communication of needs and concerns.
  • Keep informed on any political and security related matters by regular monitoring of the media, and channel this to the Project Coordinator.
  • On a need-basis, attend Nonviolent Peaceforce management team meetings as well as organisation‐wide gatherings.
  • Facilitate the hosting of field visits by staff, donors, external partners, and other key relevant visitors.
  • Assist the Project Coordinator in ensuring communications protocols including the confidentiality of information are strictly adhered to and advocacy materials (photos, pamphlets etc.) are up-to-date and regularly produced or on a need-basis
  • In coordination with the Project Coordinator, regularly share information and reports to ensure project activities are properly documented in a consistent and confidential manner.
  • Prepare other articles, reports, and presentations as needed.
  • Monitor and assess the appropriateness of activities and suggests changes and improvements to the Project Coordinator.


Duties applicable to all staff

  • Actively work towards the achievement of the goals and mandate of Nonviolent Peaceforce.
  • Abide by and work in accordance with Nonviolent Peaceforce values and principles.
  • Perform any other work-related duties and responsibilities that may be assigned by the line manager.


SKILLS AND COMPETENCIES

Experience

  • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent in social sciences or related area of studies.
  • A minimum of 2 years’ relevant work experience.
  • Extensive and demonstrated experience in conflict resolution, external relations, and training.
  • Engagement and building relationship with officials and NGOs, community and relevant stakeholders.
  • Experience and affinity with participatory training and capacity building.

Knowledge

  • A good understanding of the current political context in Northwest Myanmar.
  • A good understanding of the current protection peace building efforts and context in Chin/Magway/Mandalay
  • Sound knowledge of training methods and report writing.
  • Should be a resident in one of the township in Chin, Magway, Mandalay.


Skills

  • Fluency or communicable in written and spoken Burmese, and English;
  • Good analytical and communications skills, written and oral;
  • A positive problem-solving approach;
  • Enthusiasm to learn and apply new skills;
  • Good interpersonal and cross-cultural communication and team-working skills;
  • Ability to work under pressure and under difficult conditions.
