The senior accountant is a key member of IEEFA's US-based Finance team, responsible for day-to-day accounting operations including accounts receivable, accounts payable, payroll support, and financial reporting. This role ensures the accuracy and integrity of financial records across the organization's accounting systems and supports consolidated reporting across IEEFA's global entities. The senior accountant reports to the Finance Manager and works closely with the CFO and Finance Team to maintain consistent financial operations.
This is a remote position, based anywhere in the United States with opportunities to travel for in-person meetings and events. This position collaborates with international colleagues and IEEFA produces consolidated financials with its subsidiary, IEEFA Australia Ltd.
IEEFA is an NGO/not-for-profit that research and analyses financial and economic issues related to energy markets, trends, and policies. Headquartered in the United States, IEEFA has a team of 90+ analysts and communications personnel located in 16 countries across the globe. IEEFA produces a significant volume of original research and ongoing analysis and reports on issues affecting energy industries. Roles and Responsibilities
Accounts Receivable
- Maintain and ensure accuracy of accounts receivable and grants receivable aging reports.
- Review grant agreements to determine proper revenue recognition and appropriately record and code all revenue in the accounting system.
- Create grant and program codes in the accounting system for new grants/programs, ensure codes are properly maintained in the purchase card and accounts payable systems, and close out grant and project codes as needed.
Accounts Payable
- Maintain the accounts payable system and ensure it properly syncs with the accounting system. Troubleshoot sync issues as needed. Manage bank feed processing in the accounting system.
- Review and support the AP Administrator's management of bank feed processing into the accounting system
- Serve as backup to process incoming vendor bills in the accounts payable system, ensuring proper coding, obtaining proper approvals, and verifying all invoices.
- Review and support the AP Administrator's management W-8/W-9 updates and file maintenance, and support year-end 1099 preparation, review, and submission.
- Pay all approved vendor bills via the accounts payable system, ACH, wire transfer, or bank’s foreign currency payment system.
- Assist in maintaining positive pay and ACH control systems.
- Maintain and ensure accuracy of the accounts payable aging report.
- Ensure expenses incurred by CEO are reviewed by the Treasurer on a quarterly basis.
- Send monthly reports to the CFO on all payments processed through organization’s accounts payable system.
Payroll
- Verify W-2s and W-3s prior to filing by the payroll provider.
- Enter payroll transactions into the accounting system, including related labor, functional expense, and grant allocations.
- Perform quarterly 941 payroll reconciliations.
General Ledger, Financial Statements & Support Schedules
- Maintain the accuracy of the general ledger by generating monthly reports to review transactions for consistent coding and reclassing improperly coded transactions as needed.
- Review closed grants as part of the month-end close process to ensure integrity of the grant accounting module in the accounting system.
- Review IEEFA Australia’s accounting system for accurate reporting and consolidation of monthly revenues and expenses.
- Track the organization's net assets with and without donor restrictions.
- Generate monthly support schedules and reconcile applicable asset and liability accounts. Maintain deferred revenue and conditional review schedules and record revenue when required. Value contract deliverables and release from restrictions when earned.
- Generate monthly and year-end financial reports, including consolidated year-end financial statements, and provide them to the CFO and Finance Manager for review.
- Participate in meetings with the CFO and Finance Manager as needed to review the organization's financial performance and reports.
Additional Finance & Accounting Support
- Perform monthly bank and purchase card reconciliations and close the fiscal period in the accounting system.
- Serve as backup to manage uploads of IEEFA Australian and Employer of Record (EOR) transactions, and monthly functional allocations into the accounting system.
- Handle all currency exchange and valuation issues within the accounting system, financial statements, and support schedules.
- Review Form 990 and state returns for accuracy prior to filing. File certain state returns on behalf of the organization.
- Enter annual operating budgets, program budgets, and IEEFA Australia budgets into the accounting system.
- Provide support during the annual audit process.
- Participate in departmental and administrative meetings.
Required Qualifications
- 7+ years of experience in nonprofit accounting or finance operations including multi-currency accounting.
- Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, or business, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Proficiency with QuickBooks Online or similar accounting software.
- Experience with accounts payable, accounts receivable, and payroll functions.
- Familiarity with grant-funded organizations, grant accounting, and revenue recognition for restricted and unrestricted funds.
- Experience with financial statement preparation and month-end/year-end close processes.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Effective communicator who can work across teams, time zones, and cultures.
- Flexible, team-oriented approach with willingness to work as part of a diverse global workforce.
- Highly organized; able to check work products for accuracy, set priorities, and meet objectives and deadlines with limited direction while working remotely.

- Authorization to work in the United States.
Preferred Qualifications
- Global and/or multi-entity finance experience, including preparation of consolidated financials.
- Experience with bill payment platforms (e.g., Bill.com), expense management tools (e.g., Dext), Xero and/or foreign exchange platforms (e.g., CBForex).
- Experience with Form 990 preparation and review.
- Experience working with external auditors.
- Experience with consolidated financial reporting across international entities.
Compensation and Benefits
Full-time employment with a salary range of $84,228 - USD 101,652 USD. Work Schedule
Full-time, 40 hours/week. Due to required collaboration with international colleagues and IEEFA's global subsidiaries, the schedule may include occasional early morning or evening hours. Time off will be provided elsewhere in the schedule to compensate.
Travel
The senior accountant will work remotely and may be based anywhere in the United States. Some travel is required. Attendance is required at team retreats two to four times a year, some domestic and some international.
Physical Demand and Work Environment.
Must be able to work for prolonged periods at a computer. Computer work can involve repetitive motion, eyestrain, back, and neck strain.
