Position Overview:

In alignment with the gender mainstreaming strategy, RtR India has undertaken gender mainstreaming in literacy program. The same is being rolled out according to the Gender Development Plan of RtR India. The plan brings activities related to evidence generation through landscape studies, enhancing awareness, commitment and capacity at the level of the state to undertake gender responsive classroom practices, enhancing organizational capacity to mainstream gender in all aspects of work related to foundational literacy/education and strengthening mechanisms for creating gender aware teaching-learning materials. This position will include working closely with the program team at the national level as well as at the state level and ensuring that the gender mainstreaming plan is completed with quality, documentation of the same is maintained and reflections from all the plotted activities are carried out and fed back into the system.

Roles & Responsibilities:

Programmatic Understanding and Preparedness:

  • Thorough understanding of the LP and GE portfolios with a focus on gender mainstreaming, including its objective, approach, historical evolution, strengths and constraints; develop a broader understanding of issues and practices related to girls’ education in the country, the policy framework, latest research in the area and available data and information.

  • Understand and learn about the Annual Work Plan existing at the national and state level for GM, LP and GEP programs.

  • Coordinate and establish interdepartmental communication between national teams (Girls Education Program, Operations, Instruction Design and Teacher Support (IDTS).) and state teams towards the common outcomes and goals.

  • Work closely with state teams in ensuring that the state level activities as part of the annual work plan are completed with the right preparation in terms of materials and capacities.

  • Ensure that identified areas of gender mainstreaming in the plan are communicated well to states and advocate them to integrate it in a desired manner with 360-degree preparation in terms of training materials, capacity enhancement, and on-site support.

  • Continuously work with the state and national office team by creating formal and capitalizing informal spaces for strengthening commitment towards gender mainstreaming work.

  • Inputting on identifying areas of gender mainstreaming in terms of material creation, and training support.

  • Anchoring national-level activities and designing the learning, dissemination, and further usage of the findings and recommendations.

Program Design and Thought Leadership:

  • Develop a vision document on Gender Mainstreaming approach within Foundational Literacy.

  • Design a comprehensive plan for gender mainstreaming in Demo schools in collaboration with LP teams.

  • Design a comprehensive dissemination and implementation plan for the use of Gender Responsive Education Kit materials in demo schools.

  • Design a test program on Gender Responsive Education for schools in one district in one state.

  • Present papers in conferences on gender and education to showcase Room to Read’s work in the Gender Mainstreaming portfolio programmatically and organizationally.

Content Creation and Training Support:

  • Review LP teaching-learning and training content from a gender lens.

  • Review GEP content from products from gender lens.

  • Collaborate with LP to design a continuous capacity-building program for LFs in all LP states, including demo and custom project interventions.

  • Collaborate with GEP to conduct sessions during NMT on gender.

  • Anchor and lead the creation of training designs, relevant materials, and content for gender mainstreaming.

  • Develop notes, training documents, TOT programs, presentations, and content for various initiated capacity building; prepare and follow up for these engagements with the states.

  • Identify capacity-building needs at national and state levels, and support through technical assistance, coaching, and mentoring.

  • Anchor and lead training designs for internal capacity building of teams on gender-responsive teaching, gender mainstreaming, and gender lensing of activities.

  • Support state teams in planning and implementing field-level training, Master trainer’s training.

  • Ensure a continuum of capacity-building exercises and reflection circles of the tasks undertaken by the states.

Documentation and Qualitative Reporting:

  • Program level process documentation of monthly meetings, learning events and coordinating the same with field coordinators.

  • Support state in documentation of training, events and building a narrative.

  • Ensuring that all the activities and events are documented for institutional memory, analysis and reflection and are completed timely.

  • Reviewing state and national documents-training documents, concept notes, reports and inputting.

  • Support/upgrade in developing standard presentations, notes that can be used to represent Gender Plan to various audiences like government, donors, external agencies, academics etc.

Onsite Support:

  • Visit state fields to identify, observe and support state teams in managing Gender mainstreaming efforts.

  • Overall support to state teams in planning and implementing gender plans.

  • Organize key meetings, national workshops and conferences, under the project at national level,

  • support organizing of meetings, workshops and trainings at state level.

  • Regularly undertake and document the monthly check in calls conducted with the relevant states.

  • Undertake any other work assigned from time to time to meet the technical needs of the organization.

Qualifications:

Required:

  • The candidate should have experience of working in area of gender and education

  • Should at least hold a Master’s degree in social sciences

  • Should have at least 3-4 years of relevant experience.

  • Should be willing to undertake frequent travel at the project sites

  • Should have demonstratable experience in gender based analysis, creating training materials, facilitation

  • Should have high level of writing skills.
