THE OPPORTUNITY
Reporting to the Director, Legal Country Program, Africa, the Senior Legal Counsel will be responsible for providing high-quality legal advice and support to key stakeholders within the Foundation’s business across Africa, with a specific focus on Uganda. This role is also responsible for reviewing and advising on host country agreements and, where relevant, funding contracts. It coordinates legal support with external counsel and provides post-contracting legal support for the Country Program portfolio, as well as addressing all legal operational needs in the dedicated countries.
WAYS YOU CAN CONTRIBUTE
Provide primary legal support on programs, projects and other transactions related to the Foundation’s Africa country programs in the designated countries.
Participate in various projects providing legal support to the Foundation in the specified country.
Proactively identify, analyze, and respond to legislative developments that affect the Foundation in Uganda.
Provide support in policy discussions and negotiations with officials, both internally and externally, by developing relationships with members of the legal profession and lawyers working in external law firms and/or partner agencies in the specified countries.
Collaborate with other senior legal counsels overseeing other countries & other sub-functions, Legal and Compliance team members, in providing support to country and program teams in review of funding proposals and new program areas.
Ensure contracts are in line with the Foundation policies, procedures and strategic objectives.
Champion a values-based compliance culture as our organization evolves
Collaborate with Legal and Compliance Team to maintain and upgrade legal documentation.
Support the continuous improvement of legal processes and procedures.
Partner with the country director as the primary legal business partner on all matters pertaining to the country programmes' operations.
Build and maintain relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
WHO YOU ARE
Degree in law (LLB) from a recognized university.
Relevant professional qualification.
High-standing member of their home country bar association.
Minimum of ten (10) years’ relevant experience in a similar organization with three (3) years at the supervisory level.
Experience working in a reputable firm or in-house position with a demonstrated record of success in the given area.
Minimum of 5 years of experience in corporate, commercial, and key legal and regulatory considerations relevant to Africa.
Excellent verbal, written, and presentation skills with the ability to articulate information to a variety of constituents across cultures.
