SENIOR POLICY ADVISOR, CLIMATE DIPLOMACY & GEOPOLITICS, LONDON (INTERNAL VACANCY)

We are looking for an experienced practitioner to serve as Senior Policy Advisor for Climate Diplomacy & Geopolitics, based in London. The successful candidate will report to the Programme Lead for Foreign Policy, Climate Diplomacy & Geopolitics and work in close cooperation with other senior staff. The person would oversee a small team at the time of hiring and engage closely with colleagues working across geographies including Americas, Africa, and Asia (including China).


Role Overview 

 The role sits in E3G’s Climate Diplomacy & Geopolitics department and will contribute to shaping and delivering our multi-year strategy on climate diplomacy and geopolitics, NDC diplomacy, and great-power dynamics including cooperation and partnership in the developing world. The Senior Policy Advisor may engage on other matters related to advancing climate action and ambition in foreign policy and multilateral spaces, including for example across the G7, G20, and BRICS, as appropriate. 


Key Responsibilities 

  • Drive and coordinate E3G’s work on NDC diplomacy, including strategic advice to shape NDC delivery, narratives that resonate across domestic and international contexts, and engagement strategies and approaches to drive NDC action. 
  • Develop and oversee diplomatic and advocacy efforts to engage governments, multilaterals, and civil society actors in shaping NDCs and broader climate policy outcomes aligned with the Paris Agreement. 
  • Monitor political, economic, and climate developments in key partner countries and emerging powers, providing timely insights and evidence-based analysis to inform E3G’s strategy and advocacy. Scope areas and countries for possible deepening engagements and opportunities. 
  • Build and maintain relationships with policymakers, experts, institutions, and networks across regions, including government, business, and civil society stakeholders as relates to climate foreign policy and diplomacy in select countries and areas to strengthen E3G’s impact and influence. 
  • Provide and steer analysis, strategy, engagement
    and internal coordination as necessary on climate diplomacy, geopolitics, and foreign policy and related approaches including related to emerging powers. Advise and support diplomatic actors, think tanks, and civil society on advancing bilateral and multilateral cooperation between developed and developing countries including in different international fora and processes.
     
  • Engage in public and private policy dialogues to build consensus, identify opportunities, and drive policy change at national, regional, and multilateral levels. 
  • Collaborate across E3G teams to integrate climate diplomacy, NDC ambition, and geopolitical insights into broader organisational strategies on energy, finance, trade, resilience, and development as mutually agreed and relevant. 
  • Represent E3G externally with funders, civil society, think tanks, media, and other stakeholders on climate diplomacy, emerging powers, and geopolitics. 
  • At the time of hiring, coordinate a small, multi-location team in line with E3G policies, providing strategic oversight, mentorship, and capacity-building. 
  • Manage budgets, grants, and donor relationships as relevant. 
  • Travel internationally as required to advance E3G’s strategic priorities. 

 

Person Description 

You bring deep expertise in international diplomacy, foreign policy, and geopolitics, with a strong track record of engaging within geopolitical and foreign policy dynamics, including relating to developing countries and broader climate diplomacy strategies. You are comfortable operating in politically complex environments and have demonstrated experience navigating multilateral and bilateral diplomatic processes at senior levels. 


You combine strategic judgement with a sharp analytical mindset and are confident developing and communicating policy and geopolitical insights that inform engagement strategies. You have experience leading high-impact initiatives across international networks and are skilled in building trust-based relationships with a range of actors, including governments, think tanks, and civil society. 


You are committed to driving ambitious climate outcomes through smart diplomacy and partnership. You lead with integrity and self-awareness, work effectively across teams and cultures, and understand how to manage both complexity and delivery. You have experience managing people and processes to high standards under pressure, and you use collaboration as a lever for influence and success. 

 

Experience and Skills 

The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate: 

  • A high-quality degree or professional qualification in international relations, environmental policy, economics, or a related discipline. 
  • Extensive experience in one or more of: climate diplomacy, foreign policy, international relations, geopolitics, NDC processes, China/Asia relations, or development policy. 
  • Extensive experience working in and navigating effectively in diplomacy, foreign policy and geopolitics.
  • Experience with NDCs, China, Asia, and/or emerging powers, and engagement with Global South actors is highly desirable. 
  • Established networks across geopolitical, economic, foreign policy, and climate diplomacy communities, including among governmental, academic, civil society and/or diplomatic stakeholders. 
  • Demonstrated ability to influence policymakers across diverse cultural and political contexts. Experience operating in high-level international and political settings. 
  • Strong track record of delivering complex, multi-stakeholder initiatives on time and within budget; funder relationship management and deliverable oversight. 
  • Outstanding analytical, written, and presentation skills, able to synthesise complex political, economic and climate information for diverse audiences (policymakers, funders, civil society). 
  • Excellent written and spoken English. Other languages
    are an asset.

  • The indicative annual salary range in the UK is between £51,026 and £55,000.
