How You’ll Contribute

The Campaign Engagement and Marketing team drives the strategy, development, and execution of a major, multiyear comprehensive fundraising campaign, encompassing all donor engagement activities, including stewardship, recognition, and volunteer leadership. This is achieved through three key functions working seamlessly. Advancement Marketing converts brand awareness into philanthropic growth by inspiring donors with compelling content, innovative strategies, and stewardship that highlights impact. Campaign Engagement oversees all campaign initiatives including donor recognition and events, while Partnership Communications develops high-impact proposals and executes deliverables for donors and partners.

The Senior Manager, Advancement Digital Engagement & Personalization is responsible for defining and executing a comprehensive digital content strategy to deepen engagement, cultivate relationships, and optimize the giving experience for our donors and partners. This role will spearhead the strategic utilization of our customer data platform (CDP) to architect sophisticated donor experiences on the National Geographic Society website, drive AI-driven personalization, and deliver cutting-edge interactive digital reports that enhance engagement and stewardship.They will also provide proactive, strategic guidance and expertise within the Advancement Division and collaborate closely with the centralized digital marketing team.

Your Impact

Responsibilities Include

Digital Engagement Strategy (40%):

  • Develop and execute a digital strategy for donor and partner engagement, aligning with overall advancement and organizational goals including personalized donor and partner journeys within the CDP, ensuring seamless and impactful communications across all digital touchpoints.

  • Champion cross-division collaboration to establish robust data integration and flow, enabling advanced personalization, accurate tracking, and insightful reporting to inform strategy.

  • Proactively research, evaluate, and recommend cutting-edge digital tools, platforms, and emerging technologies (including AI and machine learning applications) to enhance donor and partner engagement, streamline operations, and drive innovation.

  • Provide expert advisory support and thought leadership across the Advancement Division and work closely with the Advancement operations team, centralized marketing team and Museum of Exploration marketing team.

Digital Content Execution (40%):

  • Oversee the strategic planning, development, and execution of high-impact email newsletters as a primary channel for cultivation, stewardship, and engagement.

  • Drive the conceptualization, development, and deployment of innovative digital experiences, including interactive annual reports, dynamic stewardship reports, and other immersive content to elevate donor and partner engagement.

  • Partner closely with Centralized Marketing and other relevant teams to strategically optimize the donor and partner experience across our digital ecosystem, including the main .org website and Museum of Exploration website, ensuring content is compelling, current, and drives philanthropic conversion.

Performance Optimization (20%):

  • Identify where current marketing processes can be improved or where they may need to be developed.

  • Establish key performance indicators (KPIs) and lead the analysis of digital performance metrics. Provide strategic insights and recommendations for continuous improvement and optimization across all digital initiatives.

What You'll Bring

Educational Background

Bachelor’s degree in a related field (Marketing, Business, etc.)

Minimum Years and Type of Experience

7+ years of experience of digital marketing experience, preferably in a non-profit environment

Necessary Knowledge and Skills

  • Seasoned professional with a proven track record in digital marketing, content strategy, and customer or donor engagement.

  • Aptitude for marketing data analysis and able to deliver strong measurable results

  • Expertise in using Customer Data Platforms (CDPs), AI-driven personalization, and digital analytics to optimize user experiences. A solid understanding of the nonprofit sector and donor journeys is also key.

  • Strong strategic thinking, excellent communication, and the ability to analyze data and lead complex projects. The role also requires close collaboration with multiple teams.

  • Knowledge of email messaging tools.

Supervision

No direct reports but may supervise marketing agencies, media buying contractors, etc.

Salary Information

The National Geographic Society offers a competitive and holistic total rewards package. Our compensation structure and transparent pay philosophy are based on industry-specific market data for similar-sized nonprofit organizations.

The salary range for this position accounts for a wide range of factors including but not limited to organizational need; specific skill sets; experience and training; certifications; and more. At the National Geographic Society, individuals are typically hired at or near the starting point of the salary range for their role, and compensation decisions are dependent on the facts and circumstances of each case.

The salary range for this position is $109,200.00 - $115,000.00.

Job Designation

Hybrid - At the Society, we believe in the advantages of coming together to build community, mentor and learn from colleagues, and connect more deeply with our mission. As a result, the majority of our staff are Hybrid. Our Hybrid category requires that staff work at Base Camp two days each week: every Tuesday and Wednesday. Hybrid staff are also always welcome to come in additional days each week if preferred.
