Job Purpose
The Staff Accountant plays a vital role on Freedom Reads’ Finance team, ensuring the accuracy, integrity, and timeliness of our day-to-day financial operations. This position is ideal for someone who thrives in a mission-driven, fast-paced environment and is passionate about supporting nonprofit financial stewardship. The Staff Accountant will handle accounts payable and receivable, payroll support, credit card reconciliations, and month-end close tasks, working collaboratively with internal staff and contributing to the financial health of the organization.
Essential Functions
- Record and maintain daily financial transactions to ensure accurate and timely accounting.
- Process accounts payable through Bill.com and manage accounts receivable, including invoicing and deposits.
- Support credit card expense management by coding and reconciling transactions in Expensify.
- Assist with bi-weekly payroll processing and related administrative tasks.
- Contribute to monthly close activities, including reconciliations and preparing documentation for financial reporting.
- Maintain organized, audit-ready financial records in line with nonprofit accounting best practices.
- Collaborate with staff across the organization to ensure proper coding, documentation, and financial understanding.
- Uphold Freedom Reads’ mission and values in all financial operations and interactions.
QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Experience
- Associate degree in Accounting (Bachelor’s in progress preferred) and at least 2 years of relevant experience in an accounting or finance setting.
- Direct experience using QuickBooks, Bill.com, Microsoft Office Suite (especially Excel), and Expensify.
- Prior payroll processing experience is a plus; we’re happy to train a mission-aligned candidate who is eager to learn.
- Flexibility, curiosity, and a willingness to develop new skills as our organization evolves.
- A strong commitment to accuracy and integrity when posting transactions and stewarding organizational resources.
