The Wellcome Trust is a global charitable foundation. We improve health for everyone by funding science, leading policy and advocacy campaigns, and building partnerships.

We plan to spend £16bn over the next ten years, funding new discoveries in life, health, and wellbeing, and taking on three global health challenges: mental health, infectious disease and climate and health.

These challenges need the bold science we support, but they won’t be solved by science alone.

We are looking for a Strategy Adviser to join our team.

Where in Wellcome will I be working?

You will be working in the Strategy Development and Impact team within the Strategy Department reporting to the Strategy Lead.

In this role you will work with Strategy Managers, reporting to a Strategy Lead to and help develop Wellcome's strategy function, enabling teams to apply strategic focus in a dynamic environment to achieve Wellcome’s vision of addressing urgent global health challenges.

The Strategy Development and Impact team is a central nexus for ensuring the organisation’s resources, processes, and activities are aligned to deliver Wellcome’s mission and strategy. The team plays a crucial role in developing Wellcome's strategy, related programmes and initiatives, and monitoring organisational impact.

What will I be doing?

You will collaborate on strategy development projects that shape our future impact. You'll engage in research, analysis, and create inclusive, clear, and impact-focused strategies. By integrating data and collaborating with diverse teams, you'll synthesise perspectives, deliver creative workshops, and create clear, well-argued recommendations that inform decision-making and supports Wellcome's mission. This role is a great opportunity to build relationships, contribute to a diverse culture, and be an expert voice in strategic discussions

As a Strategy Adviser, you will:

  • Work on strategy development projects, utilising a variety of techniques to create inclusive, impact-focused strategies.

  • Conduct research and engage with experts to inform strategic direction and communicate insights across diverse audiences.

  • Apply critical thinking to analyse inputs and develop well-argued recommendations to work towards Wellcome's strategic impact.

  • Plan and deliver workshops and forums on cross-cutting topics, collaborating with teams to create engaging strategic narratives.

  • Manage small projects, coordinating contributions, communications, and documentation to build awareness and support within Wellcome.

  • Foster relationships with stakeholders, ensure adherence to compliance policies, and contribute to a diverse and inclusive organisational culture.

This role is ideal if you have expertise in strategy development, facilitation, and project management, coupled with the ability to work collaboratively with diverse stakeholders. You'll thrive if you can generate innovative ideas, analyse complex systems, and produce clear recommendations, while maintaining a keen interest in scientific research, global health, and policy matters relevant to Wellcome.

Minimum Criteria:

  • Experience applying a variety of strategy development techniques and familiarity with outcome focused/impact frameworks (e.g. Theory of Change) to help with the creation of outcome focused strategies

  • Skilled facilitator, able to convene and structure the work of multidisciplinary groups to investigate problems and find answers to questions

  • Experience in generating new ideas, developing analysis and producing clear, well-argued recommendations

  • Experience of characterising complex systems or problems, identifying key considerations for a given issue, developing options for solutions and creating recommendations with appropriate evidence

  • Experience in planning, managing and delivering small projects/tasks that are strategically important

At Wellcome we have a hybrid way of working which is 3 days in our Euston Road offices (Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday) with the remaining 2 days working either remotely or in the office.
