POSITION DETAILS

The Hunter College Career Center seeks a motivated and student-centered professional to support career development and employer engagement efforts for students in the Social Sciences and Psychology fields. This role blends individual and group advising with programming and outreach to employers and faculty to enhance career readiness and access to meaningful opportunities. The Student Career Advisor will report to the Student Career Program Director.

In addition to the CUNY Title Overview, the Student Career Advisor will be responsible for the following duties:

  • Provide in-person and virtual career advising to students through individual appointments, walk-in hours and group sessions focused on career exploration, resume development, job/internship search strategies, and preparation for interviews and graduate school.

  • Design and deliver career programming tailored to the needs of Social Sciences and Natural Science majors, including workshops, classroom visits, employer panels, and networking events.

  • Collaborate with the Associate Director for Employer Engagement to cultivate employer partnerships in industries aligned with social and natural science majors, such as public policy, research, education, environmental science, public health (non-clinical), data analysis, and community-based advocacy.

  • Vet employers and approve job, internship, and event postings on Handshake in alignment with Hunter College guidelines.

  • Conduct outreach to faculty and student groups to promote awareness of Career Center resources and integrate career development into the academic experience.

  • Coordinate of career fairs, industry-specific events, and employer visits, including logistics, communication, and day-of support.

  • Maintain accurate records of student appointments, events, and employer interactions using platforms such as EAB Navigate, Handshake, and Excel.

  • Support the creation of career resources, such as resume guides, job search tip sheets, and industry-specific materials for students.

  • Stay informed on industry trends and opportunities in Social and Natural Sciences related fields and help connect students with alumni and employers in those areas.

  • Represent the Career Center at campus events and student orientation activities as needed.

  • Work occasional evening and/or weekend hours for appointments and programs.

QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelor's Degree required.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Master’s degree in higher education, counseling, psychology, or a related field preferred.

  • Experience in career services, employer engagement, student advising, or a related area.

  • Familiarity or academic background in the natural and/or social sciences, with the ability to support students pursuing non-clinical pathways in these fields.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.

  • Proficiency with tools such as Handshake, Navigate, and Microsoft Office.

  • Comfort facilitating workshops, presentations, and group discussions.

CUNY TITLE OVERVIEW

Provides career counseling and participates in providing comprehensive career services programs.

  • Provides employment and career counseling to students; may provide services to alumni

  • Conducts workshops on resume writing, job search research methods, preparing for job interviews, and other topics

  • Administers online job posting and resume search systems

  • Coordinates on-campus recruitment programs and interviews; attends on and off-campus meetings with employers

  • Maintains systems such as job banks, resource databases, and placement statistics; analyzes data; maintains department web site

  • Coordinates career fairs and other career office events; prepares and distributes communications regarding events and programs

  • Performs related duties as assigned.

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS

$48,911 - $57,573, Salary commensurate with education and experience.

*CUNY is in the process of implementing salary schedule increases. Once implemented, salaries of eligible employees will be adjusted by 6.09% with additional increases of 3.25% effective 9/1/2025 and 3.5% effective 9/1/26, in accordance with the terms of the PSC-CUNY collective bargaining agreement.
