Center for Civilians in Conflict (CIVIC) is an international non-governmental organization with offices around the world working to improve protection for civilians in conflict zones. CIVIC envisions a world in which no civilian is harmed in conflict. Our mission is to support communities affected by conflict in their quest for protection and work with armed actors to strengthen their capacity and resolve to prevent and respond to civilian harm. We are humanitarian protection advocates who believe that no civilian caught in conflict should be ignored, and we provide practical solutions to preventing, mitigating, and responding to civilian harm. About the Position

Center for Civilians in Conflict’s mission is to improve protection for civilians caught in conflicts around the world. We call on and advise international organizations, governments, militaries, and armed non-state actors to adopt and implement policies, tools, and training to prevent civilian harm. When civilians are harmed we advocate for the provision of amends and post-harm assistance. We bring the voices of civilians themselves to those making decisions affecting their lives.  


Job purpose: Carry out research, analysis, writing, outreach, and communications in support of CIVIC’s 2024/2025 POC Trends report under the UN Program’s portfolio.


Location: Washington, DC, New York City, Geneva, or other city where CIVIC has an established office.


Travel: None required


Reporting to: UN Director (supervisor) and Senior Research Advisor


Staff reporting: None


Duration: July 1, 2025-August 31, 2025


Key functions

  • Conduct research in support of CIVIC’s flagship publication, tracking trends in civilian harm across the globe and undertaking in-depth desk research on specific issues and countries of concern.
  • Draft content for the 2024/2025 POC Trends Report, based on research and analysis.
  • Communicate with peer organizations and national sub-grantee organizations to coordinate their contributions to the 2024/2025 POC Trends Report.


Qualities sought

  • Knowledge, experience, and understanding of civilian protection issues in armed conflict;
  • Demonstrated research experience and writing skills;
  • Ability to work well with a diverse team and experience working in a fast-paced program environment;
  • Proven ability to think analytically and plan strategically, including setting objectives
    and identifying
    and capitalizing on opportunities for our work;

  • Poise, flexibility, discretion, and mature judgment to handle and respond appropriately and professionally in internal and external communications;
  • Well organized, self-motivated;


Qualifications

  • B.A. in international affairs, political science, or related area;
  • Student in pursuit of MA or equivalent degree or recent graduate of MA program;
  • Minimum 2 years relevant research work experience required in the protection or humanitarian field;
  • Demonstrated tireless work ethic;
  • Passion for CIVIC’s subject matter and willingness to take on the responsibilities and duties as a member of our team; and
  • Fluency in English required.


CIVIC will consider providing modest renumeration for this fellowship if the funds or academic credit is not available from the fellow’s university.
