Background
Protect Our Winters (POW) was founded in 2007 by legendary snowboarder Jeremy Jones with a simple and powerful idea: the outdoor community can be one of the most influential forces for climate action. Today, POW is a leading 501(c)(3) nonprofit that unites athletes, brands, scientists, creatives, and everyday adventurers into the “Outdoor State,” 181 million people who love the outdoors and want clean air, clean water, and a healthy planet.
We know what’s at stake. Climate change is already reshaping the places we live and play, fueled by fossil fuel pollution and stalled by policy inaction. POW exists to change that. Through bold campaigns and cross-partisan coalitions, we advocate for more clean energy, defend public lands, mobilize voters, and spark cultural shifts that move policy. If you love the outdoors and want to help solve the challenge of our lifetime, join us on the climb!
The Opportunity
POW is seeking a Vice President of Marketing & Communications to lead our full digital, creative, brand, and event strategy. Their goal is to engage the Outdoor State in educational climate content and convert millions of outdoor enthusiasts into participants in advocacy campaigns.
Reporting to the CEO, the Vice President of Marketing & Communications will manage a talented and growing team and network of trusted partners to oversee digital content across web, social, and email; creative and storytelling work across photo, film, and other formats, including a portfolio of grants; and communications, earned media, and public relations that build POW’s voice and influence. This role also guides merchandise and events.
You will partner with our Campaigns & Community Department to co-create and support campaigns on climate education, clean energy, public lands, and civic engagement. You will also work with our influential Alliances of top athletes, creatives, scientists, and brands to make POW the go-to source on climate for the Outdoor State.
This is an exciting opportunity for a mission-driven leader to grow one of the most recognized voices at the intersection of climate and outdoor culture. Strong candidates will be skilled in brand building, creative development, and project management, with experience scaling omnichannel platforms reaching hundreds of thousands to millions of followers and leading digital advocacy campaigns that drive meaningful participation and measurable impact. They will be known for guiding high-performing teams through clear structures and operational processes, delivering strong results while managing budgets resourcefully. The ideal candidate will have worked with leading purpose-driven brands or environmental nonprofits and bring curiosity about the outdoor community, climate solutions, and movement building.
