Background

The Global Initiative Against Transnational Organized Crime (GI-TOC) is an independent civil society organization, headquartered in Geneva Switzerland, with offices in Austria, South Africa, Colombia and Malta, and a globally dispersed Secretariat working in around 40 countries. GI-TOC comprises a network of more than 750 independent global and regional experts working on human rights, democracy, governance and development issues where organized crime has become increasingly pertinent. GI-TOC provides a platform to promote greater debate and innovative approaches as the building blocks to an inclusive global strategy against organized crime. GI-TOC commissions and shares research globally, curates a robust resource library of 2 000 reports and tools specific to organized crime and uses its convening power to unite both the private and public sectors against organized crime.

We are seeking a Writer / Researcher to join our fast-paced, newsroom-style Reactive Content team, analysing the global news cycle through the lens of organized crime. Working predominantly on written articles, you will also support the production of podcasts and videos. You will be required to research stories, identify sources and interviewees, write succinctly, and produce high-quality analysis to deadlines.

The Role

You will work closely with the Reactive Content team to identify relevant stories, outline the links to organized crime, produce written content for articles, social media posts, and video scripts. You will also assist with researching and scripting videos and podcasts.


Main Responsibilities

  • Pitch ideas based on the current news cycle and how it relates to organised crime
  • Deliver fast, evidence-based research
  • Write articles for Substack and the GI-TOC website
  • Write clear copy for social media carousels
  • Support the scripting of short-form and long-form video content
  • Search for and verify User Generated Content (UGC) such as photos and videos
  • Translate complex information into concise, accessible narratives
  • Assist with identifying and securing relevant guests for videos and podcasts, and conduct interviews where required

Requisite skills and experience

  • Writes with clarity and speed
  • Organised and comfortable working to daily deadlines
  • Can identify the link to organised crime within a news story
  • Has strong research skills and is confident working with open-source information
  • Has an interest in organized crime and/or global affairs


Desirable

  • Experience of OSINT analysis is an advantage
  • A background in journalism, research or investigations
