About the Role
Alumni Ventures (AV) is seeking an experienced Controller to lead and continuously improve our accounting operations. Reporting to the Chief Financial Officer (CFO), this role is responsible for developing and maintaining accounting processes, practices, and controls to ensure accurate and timely financial reporting.
The Controller will manage a broad range of accounting activities including month-end close, financial reporting, audit preparation, and support of budgeting and forecasting. This role partners closely with executive leadership, department heads, and teammates across the firm, requiring strong communication skills and a collaborative mindset.
This position can be based in our Manchester, NH (preferable) or Boston office.
What You’ll Do
- Develop and maintain a thorough understanding of AV’s general ledger structure and financial reporting processes
- Lead accurate and timely monthly, quarterly, and year-end close processes
- Ensure the timely production of monthly financial statements and reporting packages
- Oversee accurate and timely processing of positive pay transactions
- Support budgeting and forecasting activities in partnership with the CFO
- Collaborate with finance teammates to support departmental goals and continuous improvement
- Respond to financial inquiries from the CFO, executives, and internal stakeholders
- Partner with the CFO to ensure a clean and efficient year-end audit
- Support special projects and workflow/process improvements
- Oversee expense reimbursement processes and expense management platforms
- Partner with the HR team on payroll, 401(k) true-ups, and related accounting matters
- Ensure proper accounting treatment for all equity and debt activity, including supporting schedules and documentation
- Ensure timely completion of all year-end filings (e.g., Form 5500, 1099s)
- Maintain up-to-date knowledge of GAAP, FASB standards, and relevant tax regulations
- Contribute positively to AV’s culture by modeling AV values and working toward our North Stars
Who You Are
- 8+ years of progressive accounting experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance; CPA strongly preferred
- Strong technical accounting expertise
- Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel, including financial modeling
- Experience with ERP systems; NetSuite experience required
- Experience supporting cross-border accounting activities is preferred
- Familiarity with payroll systems
- Experience with expense management systems
- Highly detail-oriented with excellent organizational skills
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet frequent, tight deadlines
- Superior analytical and problem-solving abilities
- Ability to adapt quickly and perform well in a fast-paced environment
