Role Explanation

The role will focus on analysing Japan’s energy transition and its financial, economic, and policy implications amid the global shift toward decarbonization. The role will assess Japan’s energy market, investment flows, policy developments, and corporate and financial sector strategies, producing clear, data-driven analysis on risks, opportunities, and alignment with climate goals to inform policymakers, investors, media, and the public.

The role also involves active engagement with Japan’s financial and energy communities to understand evolving practices, build strategic relationships, and help inform and influence approaches to energy transition and sustainable finance.

The successful candidate will have:

  • A degree in finance, economics, accounting, or political science and/or with professional certifications (e.g. CFA) or appropriate and relevant market-oriented experience in lieu of those degrees
  • Four or more years’ relevant experience in finance, market analysis, and/or energy or related fields
  • Knowledge of and/or experience with Japan’s energy transition
  • Experience publishing thought pieces on Japan’s energy transition
  • A strong grasp on the potential key levers to advance Japan’s energy transition
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively and with good political judgment both orally and in writing


Key Responsibilities

  • Research and produce original, high-quality reports and commentary on Japan’s energy transition
  • Analyse Japan’s financial and other support for energy sectors and transitions across Asia, including public finance and commercial institutions
  • Monitor industry trends, policies, and market developments to inform research priorities
  • Present findings to targeted stakeholders to drive engagement and influence change
  • Build and maintain relationships with industry, government, regulators, and financial institutions to inform analysis and contribute to IEEFA’s stakeholder database
  • Collaborate with internal teams and external partners, including policymakers, financial institutions, and industry experts, to maximise research impact
  • Represent IEEFA at meetings and industry events and engage stakeholders across Japan’s public and private sectors
  • Provide media insights and respond to interview requests, particularly on LNG-related aspects of Japan’s energy transition



Work Schedule and Compensation

Remote, full-time. Due to collaboration with international teams, the schedule will include some early morning or later evening hours to accommodate time zones.

Hiring Range

USD 82,476 - USD 99,540 or local equivalent based on currency, cost of living adjustment, and internal equity. Benefits and holidays are determined based on the country of residence. All employees receive a one-time home office set-up allowance, monthly cell phone and internet stipend, optional co-working rental support and minimum of 20 days of vacation and 10 days of sick leave.

Physical Demand and Work Environment

Must be able to work for prolonged periods at a computer. Computer work can involve repetitive motion, eyestrain, back and neck strain.
