The role
The Centre for Future Generations is looking for a Finance & Accounting Officer to join our finance team in Brussels. This is a hands-on role at the heart of our finance function, responsible for the day-to-day financial operations.
You will manage daily bookkeeping, accounts payable and receivable, reconciliations, and support our monthly close process. You will work closely with the CFOO and an external accountant, and interact regularly with grant managers and budget holders across the organisation. This role bridges operational accounting with strategic financial support, and offers a genuine stepping stone toward a financial analyst or controller profile.

Areas of responsibility

  • Bookkeeping & Transactions: Record and process invoices, payments, and expenses across both entities with accurate coding.
  • Accounts Payable & Receivable: Manage AP/AR end-to-end: invoice processing, payment runs, and expense management, ensuring compliance with invoicing requirements.
  • Reconciliations: Reconcile bank accounts and ledgers regularly, manage intercompany adjustments, and maintain a clean, audit-ready general ledger.
  • Month-end & Year-end Close: Support monthly close and year-end statutory reporting; prepare management reports in coordination with external accountants.
  • Finance Operations Support: Support grant reporting, payroll administration, and day-to-day coordination with external advisors (statutory accountants and social secretariat).

What you will need to succeed in this role

Education & experience

  • Bachelor’s or master’s degree in Accounting or Finance.
  • Proven hands-on accounting experience, including month-end and year-end close procedures.
  • Experience in a multi-entity or dual-jurisdiction environment is a strong advantage.
  • Background in the NGO, philanthropy, or non-profit sector is an advantage, but not a requirement.

Technical skills

  • Proficiency in accounting software (ERP); experience with Exact Online is an advantage.
  • Experience with expense management tools such as Payhawk (or equivalent).
  • Familiarity with Belgian B2B e-invoicing via Peppol.
  • Knowledge of Belgian GAAP and Dutch GAAP; experience working across both frameworks is a strong advantage.
  • Strong Excel skills (intermediate to advanced).

How you work

  • You take ownership of your remit: you manage your work end-to-end and do not need hand-holding to deliver.
  • You are proactive: you identify and raise issues before they become problems.
  • You are organised, accurate, and reliable — you manage your own deadlines and keep your work clean.
  • You are curious: when something doesn’t look right, you investigate rather than wait.
  • Fluent in English (written and spoken); Dutch is a plus.

A note on fit

CFG is a fast-evolving organisation with a finance function that is well set up — systems, tools, and processes are in place. What we need now is someone who takes confident ownership of day-to-day finance operations and helps us run them better, in close collaboration with our external accountants and the CFOO. If you want real responsibility, direct access to leadership, and the space to make the role your own — this is an excellent opportunity.
