SCOPE OF POSITION:

Reporting to the Manager Marketing and Direct Response, the Fund Development Officer, Direct Response is responsible for coordinating and implementing an integrated Direct Response program to grow and sustain Oxfam Canada’s unrestricted revenue and donor participation. The successful candidate will be responsible for designing, executing and optimizing existing direct response revenue streams, with a primary focus on direct mail and print, but may include telemarketing, email appeals, DRTV and other direct response acquisition opportunities that may be introduced as part of the Oxfam Canada’s Fund Development strategy. In carrying out these responsibilities, the Fund Development Officer, Direct Response will work with both internal and external stakeholders to successfully deliver on program results.


MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES: (This is not an exhaustive list of duties to be performed)

Direct Response Program Development and Execution:

  • Work with the Manager and broader department to develop and implement an integrated direct response program that maximizes net income and achieves overall program targets and objectives.
  • Execute the creative development, design and deployment of all direct response mail and assigned email appeals with a particular focus on growing unrestricted revenue, acquiring and activating donors at increasing giving levels.
  • Work with other units within the Fund Development Department; Policy, Campaigns and Communications Department; and the International Programs Department to leverage key moments, events, stories and content to maximize results, and enhance the donor’s journey and sense of impact to create long-term loyalty and value.
  • Identify and apply appropriate innovations within direct response fundraising and stewardship by adjusting strategies and tactics.
  • Ensure that all direct response program initiatives are in compliance with national and provincial regulations including, but not limited to PIPEDA, CASL, CRA, CMA, Imagine Canada’s Ethical Fundraising and Financial Accountability Code and AFP’s Code of Ethical Principles and Standards.



Direct Response Program Coordination:

  • Coordinate internally and with external agencies in the delivery of direct response campaigns and appeals by developing revenue, communication and donor segmentation objectives, providing direction, sourcing content, reviewing copy and creative, leveraging the CRM, and facilitating necessary donor data.
  • Ensure the schedule and critical path for each component of the direct response program, including acquisition, stewardship and conversion tactics are on track and stakeholders informed. Use Asana and other project coordination scheduling tools.
  • Facilitate and recommend donor segmentation and data-pulls within the direct response program that crosses other objectives within the Fund Development department.
  • Manage and maintain inventories of direct response materials.
  • Work closely with communications and digital colleagues to ensure integration of online and offline direct response initiatives and effectively leverage social media and other public engagement for fundraising and donor engagement purposes.
  • Work closely with the Monthly Giving team and other stakeholders for Shareplan integration with the direct response program and annual calendar (i.e. telemarketing, direct mail, digital).
  • Work closely with the Philanthropy team for Major Gift and Legacy donors integrated within the direct response program
  • Work with the Donor Relations team to support donor stewardship strategies and practices
  • Provide recommendations and work to enhance the donor experience and maximize long-term donor value.



Program Analysis, Data & Reporting:

  • Ensure that proper tracking systems are in place to monitor online and offline campaigns and appeals.
  • Monitor and analyse appeal performance and campaign effectiveness against set benchmarks and performance metrics.
  • Make recommendations based on insights and analysis of appeal and segment performance
  • Working with FDO, Data Insights, run donor segmentation reports, monitor giving patterns, leverage channel preferences, etc. to glean insights and make recommendations for the donor’s journey.
  • Produce weekly and monthly reports showing performance against targets.
  • Contribute to the Marketing and Direct Response Unit quarterly program performance evaluation and Board reports.
  • Work closely with the Information Systems (IS) team to ensure data integrity, effective data capture and data pulls, and identify data opportunities and challenges.

Financial and Budget Management:

  • Work with the Manager, Marketing and Direct Response to develop a detailed annual revenue and expense plan and budget for the direct response program.
  • Monitor monthly revenue and expense budgets to ensure targets can be met.
  • Review program expenditures and process the payment of invoices in a timely manner.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, EXPERIENCE & COMPETENCIES:

  • University degree or post-secondary diploma in Marketing/Fundraising or equivalent combination of education and experience working in the not-for-profit.
  • A minimum of five (5) years of fundraising or marketing experience with preferably three (3) years of experience coordinating direct response programs within the charitable sector or in a non-governmental organization.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the principles and practices associated with direct response fundraising, both online and offline.
  • Proven record of achievement in developing and implementing an integrated multi-channel direct response program.
  • Experience communicating for direct response purposes and proven ability to communicate complex issues in a concise, professional and easily understood manner.
  • Demonstrated excellent writing, editorial and overall communication skills.
  • Excellent written and spoken skills in English required, proficiency with a second language (preferably French or Spanish) is a definite asset.
  • Ability to organize and prioritize work, managing multiple projects efficiently and with high attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Excellent analytical and strategic coordination skills.
  • Demonstrated budget management skills.
  • Proven capacity to work in a self-directed manner as well as demonstrated capacity to work collaboratively with other staff and volunteers.
  • High proficiency using computer applications including Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, MS Teams, Photoshop, and Adobe InDesign.
  • High proficiency working in Excel with large spreadsheets and complex data sets.
  • High proficiency in working with CRM’s, data analytics and digital marketing platforms, including Salesforce, Engaging Networks. Google Analytics, Google Data Studio and Shopify an asset.
  • Demonstrated knowledge, understanding and commitment to global justice, social change, women’s rights and gender equality.
  • CFRE Designation is an asset.
  • Willingness to sign and abide by the Oxfam Code of Conduct.
  • Demonstrated commitment to feminism, anti-racism, justice, equity, diversity and inclusion.
