1. Context

Relief International (RI) is an international non-profit organization that partners with communities impacted by conflict, climate change and disaster to save lives, build greater resilience and promote long-term health and wellbeing.

Our team of more than 7,000 staff and local volunteers work in 15 countries across Africa, Asia, and the Middle East, providing Health and Nutrition, WASH (Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene), Education and Livelihoods programming that creates the foundation for community resilience.

We do this by working with local actors to develop safe and inclusive local programming that is evidence based, conflict sensitive, climate smart, and reaches those in need.

2. Job Profile

The MEAL Assistant supports the implementation of Monitoring, Evaluation, Accountability, and Learning (MEAL) activities at the field level. Under the direct supervision of the MEAL Senior Officer / MEAL Officer, the Assistant is responsible for routine data collection, verification of project activities, and facilitating beneficiary feedback and accountability processes. The role ensures accurate and timely field data gathering and reporting to inform program quality and accountability to affected populations.

3. Key Responsibilities

Field Data Collection:

  • Conduct quantitative and qualitative data collection (PDM, exit interviews, KAP surveys, FGDs, KIIs) using digital tools (e.g., Kobo, Power Apps) or paper-based forms, ensuring adherence to approved methodologies.

Verification (Spot Checks):

  • Carry out on-site spot checks of activities and services to verify accuracy and quality according to RI standards.
  • Conduct regular field monitoring visits to protection/Health centers and complete monitoring checklist forms.

Field and Accountability to Beneficiaries (Beneficiary Engagement)

  • Receive and document feedback and complaints from beneficiaries through various channels ( complaint boxes, face-to-face).
  • Refer cases to the relevant focal point and follow up to ensure timely feedback is provided back to communities.
  • Check FCRM tools in the facilities to ensure they are in appropriate places and accessible to beneficiaries.
  • Support awareness sessions and group discussions with beneficiaries to explain accountability mechanisms and collect feedback.
  • Provide logistical and technical support during surveys, focus group discussions, and other MEAL-related field activities.

Reporting:

  • Submit daily/weekly updates to the MEAL Officer on data collection progress, challenges, and field observations.

Collaboration:

  • Collaborate with the program team to conduct joint questionnaires for project assessments and evaluations.
  • Needs Assessments: Assist in conducting initial needs assessments and provide qualitative observations from the field.
  • Work closely with mobile teams and program staff to ensure smooth and coordinated data collection.

4. Person Specification

Skills, knowledge and expertise required for the role.

Essential criteria

  • University degree in a relevant field.
  • Minimum one to two years’ experience in the same field.
  • Previous experience in data collection using digital tools (e.g., Kobo, ODK, ONA, CommCare) or paper forms.
  • Basic knowledge of monitoring and evaluation practices (surveys, FGDs, KIIs, data entry).
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with ability to engage respectfully with communities.
  • Basic proficiency in MS Word, Excel, and internet use.
  • Fluency in Arabic, with working knowledge of English.
  • Commitment to RI values, safeguarding, and accountability principles.

Desirable criteria

  • Previous experience with humanitarian or development organizations, particularly in the Health, Protection, or Nutrition sectors.
  • Report writing skills in English.
  • Familiarity with accountability mechanisms and community feedback processes.
